Job Description

Essential Job Functions:

Technical Expertise: Exhibits the highest level of proficiency and expert knowledge of transmission line engineering that enables the engineer to serve as the expert and highest-level resource for the company in that area. The staff engineer will be assigned to special projects, primarily as the Transmission Line Engineering planning, bidding, and execution lead for competitive projects. This includes execution of both on-footprint and off-footprint projects for AEP, Transource and other joint ventures. The engineer will support other special projects as needed and as time may allow, including TLE process improvements, various compliance activities, and the Digital Transmission Line Model (DTLM).

Leadership & Guidance: Leads AEP system-wide activities in specific areas of engineering. Leads project and development activity related to specific, unique, and/or highly specialized areas of engineering application. Influences the direction of thinking throughout the AEP system as a recognized authority in an area of expertise. The engineer will lead a team to execute the work, which may be assigned as direct reports to the Engineer Staff, and/or matrixed from other areas within the Transmission Line Engineering organization.

Planning & Organization Ability: Develops, recommends, and implements plans to address AEP system-wide issues within specialized field of technical expertise. The engineer will take high-level direction from their supervisor and the project leadership team and determine the optimal response to achieve the stated goals. The tactics and details of the engineer’s work will be accomplished with minimal input from their supervisor.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Identifies, resolves, and initiates solutions to highly complex problems that are unique to the company and industry and requires extensive specialized knowledge of equipment and/or problem solving techniques, or the development of knowledge and techniques. The engineer will reason through and develop multiple alternatives for consideration when developing solutions. The engineer must have a working understanding of how design decisions impact constructability and project cost, and be able to apply this knowledge to project bids.

Communication: Leads in the preparation and presentation of the most complex technical subjects, clearly, concisely, and persuasively, bringing in ancillary issues before senior management, professional organizations, regulatory bodies, external stakeholders including other utilities, etc.

Interpersonal Skills: Builds teams and networks that extend through AEP, and other companies, professional organizations, regulatory agencies, and academia. It is expected that the engineer actively participates with at least one industry organization and takes clear steps to attain leadership positions within that organization.

Decision Making : Makes decisions that are likely to impact the AEP system, business objectives and strategic direction. Possesses the knowledge and experience to make and take full accountability for all technical decisions. Understanding how design decisions impact goal achievement is critical to this position’s success.

Business Awareness & Characteristics: Demonstrates the ability to make their area of expertise a strategic asset of the AEP system.

Minimum Requirements:

Has typically acquired ten (10 ) or more years of related engineering experience along with a Bachelor's degree in engineering in a program accredited by ABET; OR eight (8) years of related engineering experience along with a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a program accredited by ABET.

Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in any U.S. state or Puerto Rico is required for this position** unless approval to waive this requirement is given by the organization's EVP.

*ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

Acceptable alternatives are:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. OR

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.** Confirmation is required to ensure the PE obtained in Puerto Rico aligns with NCEES standards.

Compensation Range:

$129,963.00-168,952.00 USD
