Scope of Job

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Music seeks an accomplished Assistant Professor tenure-track faculty member to serve as Director of Bands, working collaboratively with the School of Music faculty to promote and advance the University Band program. The successful candidate will provide a strong artistic vision, leadership, and mentorship for the students within the program. The start date of this appointment is Fall 2025.

The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and mentoring of students in research, outreach, and professional development.

Key responsibilities for this position may include:

-Conducting one or more concert band ensembles, including the Wind Orchestra.

-Teaching classes in instrumental conducting, wind band literature, and/or other courses related to the successful candidate’s expertise.

-Contributing scholarly research and/or creative activity within local, state-wide, and national levels.

-Maintaining a public presence within the community and fostering positive relationships with area band directors.

-Engaging in service activities at the department, college, university, community, and professional levels.

-Collaborating with the Director of Athletic Bands in a team approach to overall band area leadership.

-Assisting with athletic bands when necessary.

The UTRGV School of Music is located on the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses and prepares students to succeed as teachers, performers, and scholars by studying diverse musical styles, genres, and traditions; conducting research; and collaborating with each other as well as with local, national, and global communities. Through extensive community engagement, service learning, and exceptional performance opportunities, we expand the understanding of music and enrich the cultural life in our local society and beyond. The School of Music has over 400 students and over 50 faculty members. Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Music with Teacher Certification, a Bachelor of Music in Performance, and Master’s Degrees in Music Education, Performance, Ethnomusicology, Theory-Composition, Multiple Instrument Performing and Conducting.

Minimum Qualifications

Earned doctorate in a relevant field of music from an accredited institution by the start date of the appointment (August 2025).

Preferred Qualifications

Documented experience in the area of university ensembles.

Demonstrated success in college-level teaching.

The ability to contribute skills in teaching, research, and service consistent with the expectations of UTRGV and the School of Music.

Experience teaching courses and/or conducting ensembles full-time at the university level or equivalent experience in full-time professional music ensembles.

Demonstrated ability to connect with region band program directors and students.

Experience with developing and implementing systematic recruitment activities which include but are not limited to off-campus high school visits, on-campus clinics and workshops for area high school students.

Established profile as a performing artist/conductor or demonstrated potential to develop a national level profile as a performing artist/conductor.

Additional Information

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may

require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is

performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive

and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code

§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of

Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least

135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement

Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week

and at least 135 days in length.
