Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Software Engineer 4, Principal Systems Architect in Richland, Washington

Responsibilities

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) seek a Senior Systems Architect to further EMSL’s digital ecosystem and integrated research goals. The candidate should have experience in software development and managing scientific data using FAIR principles.

  • Provide architectural oversight for developing highly complex new and enhanced scientific applications/data products. Integrates components built by application developers and programmers as needed. Provides technical advice to all digital teams within EMSL.

  • Communicate effectively with EMSL leaders and researchers, subject matter experts, and other stakeholders to understand current and future needs to manage scientific data by DOE BER requirements.

  • Acts as liaison between external BER sources and EMSL to develop and integrate data sources and ensure the data follows BER standards and guidelines.

  • Lead strategy development, planning, and implementation of complex scientific workflows that integrate internal and external BER and other relevant data resources. Proven experience in design and implementation in the modern data stack.

  • Studies/applies industry benchmarks to formulate non-functional requirements like scalability, performance, automation, APIs/interfaces, integrations, etc.

  • Explaining the technical solutions and coaching the solutions team (e.g., developers, UI/UX designer, etc.)

  • Extensive knowledge of software architecture, sound knowledge of technical and functional architecture, and common architecture patterns

  • Take end-to-end responsibility for the development, quality, availability, and integrity of data, solutions, and respective systems and integrate proactive strategies and best practices regarding data integrity, security, and scalability.

  • Adhere to and drive modern software engineering practices through code and design reviews and by using data/telemetry to make decisions.

  • Partner cross-functionally to build and improve new/existing constructs and solve data engineering problems. Experience leading and managing cross functional teams

  • Provide career development coaching, mentoring, and feedback to ensure team members have appropriate technical, business and operational skills, training, and experience. Promote a healthy organizational culture through a supportive and inclusive work environment.

  • Build strong relationships with relevant PMs, PMODs, peers, upper management, and other relevant internal/external stakeholders to advocate for staff members, as well as assist team members in forming and maintaining strong professional networks.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

  • PhD with 3+ year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ETL, SQL, NoSQL, and Data Management frameworks

  • Experience with cloud technologies

  • Backend languages and tools such as Python, PostgreSQL, and database management.

  • 10-12 years of experience with data architecture, large-scale data modeling, networking and database design, and business requirements gathering analysis, ideally including technical leadership

  • Knowledge of programming languages Python, C/C++, Java, and Perl, and datavisualization tools such as R/Shiny, Tableau, D3.js

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience.
