Summary

The Senior Staff Engineer, Electrical Design develops innovative electrical systems and circuits for computer systems, with a focus on peripheral systems including storage media, memory, power systems, and high-speed data interface circuitry.

This role involves researching computer system concepts such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. Responsibilities include creating technical specifications based on system requirements documents, component selection, schematic capture, overseeing PCB layout, and developing test plans.

The Senior Staff Engineer will provide expert technical support and guidance for testing, high-speed signal simulation, board bring-up, and validation. They will also offer ongoing support throughout the manufacturing process of the electrical systems they design.

Collaboration is key, as the Senior Staff Engineer works in cross-functional teams with designers, customers, manufacturing engineers, and project leaders to ensure robust and high-quality product development. They will incorporate feedback from reviews in areas such as manufacturing, testing, supply chain, reliability, industrial design, and simulations to enhance designs.

Detailed Description

Performs tasks such as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Designs, develops, and implements technical solutions for complex projects

  • Participates in project planning and scheduling

  • Designs and tests GPU and CPU-based computer systems, circuit boards, and storage media

  • Designs high-speed data signal circuitry incorporating Gigabit Ethernet networking switches with PAM4 SERDES cores

  • Takes responsibility for non-technical aspects of engineering projects (schedule, budget, and documentation release)

  • Reviews and interprets customer specifications, analyzes trade-offs in complex systems, and recommends solutions

  • Leads the deployment of strategic technologies/programs and coordinates global deployment efforts

  • Designs, modifies, and implements systems that meet customer and Celestica needs, including creating schematics, bills of materials, diagrams, and drawings

  • Liaises with suppliers, customers, contractors, and internal teams, effectively managing relationships with key vendors/partners

  • Experience with designing rack-based networking switches is highly desirable

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies

  • ​​​​​​Experience with high-speed serial data protocols such as SPI, I2C, and USB is required

  • Must be familiar with designing with optical transceivers, including SFP, OSFP, and QFSP. Familiarity with NRZ modulation is desired

  • Comprehensive knowledge and industry recognition, with a proven ability to provide technical leadership and direction to a global team of engineers

  • Up-to-date knowledge of relevant industry trends and regulations regarding AI, machine learning, and accelerated compute platforms

  • Experience in rack design for accelerated compute platforms

  • Knowledge of Broadcom chips and their application cases is a strong plus

  • Experience in hardware design and development, with a deep understanding of complex concepts related to architecture, design engineering, reliability, prototyping, and failure analysis

  • Strong organizational, planning, and program management skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment of engineers to meet aggressive goals and high-quality standards

  • Excellent multitasking and problem-solving skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • International cultural awareness and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively within a global team

Physical Demands

  • Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.

  • Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.

  • Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

Typical Experience

  • 11 to 14 years

Typical Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Hardware, Electrical, Telecom or related technical field.

  • 7+ years' of relevant experience in server or storage
