Project Overview:
This position is long-term, direct employment while working as a Fire Protection Engineer supporting the design, construction, and commissioning of Bechtel projects. The position will serve in the Functional Mechanical Engineering group. You will be directly assisting an Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in his or her duties with code and standard interpretations, determinations, and equivalencies, as well as supporting the design and installation of fire protection systems and preparing changes to existing fire hazards analyses (FHAs) and technical reports. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in process and fire protection system design, the application of fire protection and life safety codes and standards and will be capable of developing FHA design documents that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design. The ideal candidate will be familiar with International Building and Fire Codes and NFPA codes and standards and be capable of providing consultation services to various Bechtel projects on these codes and standards.
Job Summary:
Support projects by developing AHJ interpretations and determinations, justifying equivalencies, performing engineering analyses, and enforcing codes and standards.
Provide technical guidance in the origination and review of engineering analyses and engineering judgments for alternative fire protection arrangements, fire barrier systems, opening protectives, and penetration firestops.
Support the development and maintenance of the FHA program for the facilities utilizing recognized fire protection industry approaches, methodologies, calculations, and analyses, including advanced fire modeling.
Support project needs for design, design review, installation, and commissioning as needed to support project deadlines.
Support Construction and Operations on an as needed basis.
Interface with internal and external customers, as required, for the design, installation, and testing of the passive and active fire protection systems and components.
Support Department of Energy (DOE) or other external regulatory agency reviews of the fire protection aspects of the design and installation on the project.
Interface with multidiscipline design teams to provide direction, feedback, and validation of engineering and design efforts.
Perform Fire Protection reviews to determine compliance with applicable DOE orders, NFPA standards, model building codes, and FM standards.
Provide technical guidance in the development of fire protection interpretations and equivalencies to the regulatory standards, building code, and the NFPA codes and standards.
Support the fire protection subcontracts with the installation of fire sprinkler and fire detection and alarm systems.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience working in Fire Protection or 9-12 years of relevant work experience in Fire Protection.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (for engineering support at the construction site), and background check.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the fire, life safety, and building codes including IBC/IFC, NFPA, UL and FM codes and standards.
Must be familiar with commercial risk management and fire protection protocol.
Must be able to travel to project jobsites 1-2 times per year.
(Preferred) - BS or MS degree in Fire Protection Engineering from an accredited university or college, with a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in Fire Protection.
(Preferred) - Registered Fire Protection Engineer (Professional Engineers License).
(Preferred) - Experience as a fire protection engineer at a major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with a strong background in fire suppression and fire alarm system design and fire hazards analysis preparation.
(Preferred) - Experience working on DOE or DOD government projects, including experience with DOE fire safety requirements (e.g., DOE STD-1066, DOE Order 420.1).
(Preferred) - Experience working on nuclear power plant projects, including experience with US NRC regulations and regulatory guidance (e.g., Reg Guide 1.189).
(Preferred) - Experience with fire modeling using Consolidated Model of Fire and Smoke Transport (CFAST).
(Preferred) - Experience in chemical process facilities, codes and standards for hazardous materials, and safety regulatory compliance.
