Project Overview:

Bechtel is building a semiconductor manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio. We are partnering with the North America Building Trades Unions and suppliers to create several thousand new jobs and work with local education organizations to implement new training programs that will support the future talent pipeline. Bechtel Manufacturing & Technology, Inc. offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the semiconductor manufacturing, electric vehicle, and data center markets. Headquartered in Reston, Virginia, the M&T global business unit also includes colleagues working in Arizona, Ohio, Texas, India, and additional project locations around the world.

Job Summary:

Bechtel is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to assist with Project Cardinal within the Manufacturing and Technology Business Unit.

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.” #LI-AM3

Major Responsibilities:

  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.

  • Coordinate engineering efforts in assigned areas between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other groups.

  • When delegated, assumes a lead technical role over other engineers or project subgroups for completing specific tasks. Assists in on-the-job-training of assigned personnel and provides input for their performance evaluations.

  • Performs or assists in the performance of problem analysis and original design.

  • Reviews and checks work of subordinate engineers.

  • Reviews mechanical, fire protection, life safety systems design, and engineering studies prepared by other engineering firms.

  • Provide guidance and ensures engineering quality design and compliance with project requirements, local design guidelines, local codes, and standards of independent engineering firms that are carrying out the detailed engineering design.

  • Coordinate and visit jobsite as required, to resolve problems, interpret drawings and document and provide technical support during the construction phase.

  • Represent the client in technical meetings and Value Engineering analysis. Coordinates with other disciplines, consultants and attends project meetings.

  • Review contractors shop drawings, technical queries, and technical submittals to ensure compliance with design documents.

  • Understand customer requirements and converting them into design criteria for mechanical systems manufacturing process.

  • Develop schematic and conceptual designs for fire protection systems.

  • Produce key mechanical / fire protection engineering deliverables, including CADD models, drawings, specifications, and supporting calculations.

  • Managing engineering subcontracts with their design and delivery per contract requirements.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent related field from an accredited institution and 4-6 years of engineering experience with a minimum of 1-2-years’ experience related to fire protection / mechanical life safety systems in semiconductor / manufacturing facility.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Professional license or registration as a Mechanical Engineer.

  • Experience in the design of mechanical systems including fire protection.

  • Experience in managing engineering subcontracts with design and delivery per contract requirements.

  • Knowledge of codes and standards applicable to the design of mechanical systems including ASHRAE, ASME, IBC, IMC and NFPA.

  • Specifying a Fire-protection systems Sprinkler system and F/P equipment

  • Fire Water system capacity requirements Specify pump and storage tank capacity

  • Experience in wet pipe systems per NFPA 13“Standard for Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 14 (Standard for installation of standpipe and Hose system) & FM standards

  • Experience in Fire-protection equipment such as pumps, storage tank and deluge systems

  • Cooling Tower Deluge System sprinklers in accordance with NFPA 214

  • Acceptance tests as required and outlined in NFPA 13 and as required by the authorities having jurisdiction.

  • Knowledge on semiconductor manufacturing design process as an advantage for all positions.

  • Detailed knowledge of and experience working with NFPA standard 318 and IFC Chapter 27.

  • Knowledge of and experience with insurance guidelines for semiconductor manufacturing facilities such as FM Data Sheet 7-7 and FM global standards 4910 and 4922.

  • Ability to review and manipulate CADD models.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Proven team player with the ability to work effectively within a team.

  • Ability to work in the US without visa sponsorship.
