Indian Health Service Sanitarian (Environmental Health Consultant) in Reno, Nevada

Summary The Senior Sanitarian serves as a district subject matter expert on all matters related to Environmental Health. Incumbent is responsible for training, coaching and mentoring new and less experienced Environmental Health Specialists. Additionally responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive environmental health program in conjunction with the District Environmental Health Officer. This position is located in Reno, NV. Responsibilities This position is being re-advertised to solicit additional applications. Senior Sanitarian is a recognized master of all facets of the general environmental health scope of service. Specialty areas include food safety, community institutions, specialized entertainment centers, sanitation facilities, vector-borne & communicable diseases and program system software (WebEHRS and Mobile WebEHRS). Sanitarian participates in field inspections working alongside the field Environmental Health Specialist providing guidance, coaching and cross-training to the field Environmental Health Specialist. Identifies areas of need in the general environmental health program and develops specialized initiatives to address the needs. The initiatives may include but not be limited to vector control, hazardous materials, food safety, water quality, complex community institutions, air quality, etc. Manages the Division of Environmental Health Services resources library housing guidelines, standards, inspection marking instructions and trainings. Independently collects and analyzes data used to evaluate the program and submits this information for inclusion in the annual reports, work plans and other reporting documents for the Phoenix Area IHS. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S), GS-0688: A full 4-year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor's degree, and that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in a science or any combination of sciences directly related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical science); OR Four years of experience in inspectional, investigational, technical support, or other responsible work that provided a knowledge and a fundamental understanding of, and the ability to use, environmental health principles, methods, and techniques equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4-year college curriculum OR A combination of education and experience as described above. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications and Selective Placement Factors stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, GS-12:Your resume must demonstrate at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Expert level knowledge of inspections pertaining to food service facilities, child care facilities, correctional institutions and health care facilities. Expert level knowledge in the use of the Indian Health Service survey reporting system known as, WebEHRS. Expert ability to train individuals from across the spectrum of knowledge and professional levels. Expert ability to research and problem solve emerging environmental hazards and make recommendations for corrections. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: The following Selective Placement Factor has been determined to be essential for the position. Applicants who do not meet a selective factor are ineligible for further consideration. This position requires competencies in environmental health practice as evidenced with possession of a valid professional registration as a Registered Sanitarian (RS) or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) or a state RS/REHS with NEHA reciprocity.
