Classification Description Summary

Under direction, performs a variety of preventative maintenance and repair on small engines and equipment. Welds, cuts, and fabricates metal parts for repair of snowplows, loader buckets, herbicide application vehicles, tanks and sprayers, stencil trucks, thermoplastic trucks, vactors, rodders, flushers and associated equipment and tools.

Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Inspect, analyze, and troubleshoot a variety of systems and equipment.

  • Run tests and interpret results to make effective recommendations/ repairs.

  • Write reports and keep accurate records.

  • Perform routine small engine maintenance such as oil changes, spark plug replacement, air filter maintenance, and drive assembly maintenance.

  • Repair or replace worn, defective, or broken parts.

  • Weld/ braze/ solder a variety of metals.

  • Modify/ fabricate a variety of tools from basic hand tools to large truck implements.

  • Read plans, manuals, and blueprints and accurately fabricate parts accordingly to plan.

  • Confer and coordinate vehicle component repairs with Fleet maintenance staff.

  • Safely use a variety of metal cutting tools such as but not limited to Oxy/Acetylene torch, plasma cutter, band saw, miter saw, drill press, grinder, etc.

  • Utilizes computerized maintenance management system to look up and review work orders and enter time and material costs.

  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Combinations of education and experience that are equivalent to the following minimum qualifications are acceptable.

Education and Experience:

Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent

Four years of increasingly responsible maintenance experience that includes two years of demonstrated journey-level experience in assigned skilled trade.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess a valid commercial driver's license.

  • All required certifications as mandated by state and federal laws, or as required by the City, must be obtained and maintained as a condition of continued employment

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities:

All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the City and its citizens.

  • Advanced methods and techniques of repairing and maintaining equipment used in the maintenance and construction of streets, signs, sewers, storm drains, fountains, planters, and related public works structures.

  • Operational characteristics of a variety of heavy trucks and specialized maintenance equipment.

  • Proper maintenance and repair procedures of hand and power tools.

Ability to:

  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.

  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.

  • Work in a team-based environment to achieve common goals.

  • Understand of the methods, practices, materials, and tools used in a variety of maintenance and repair work, safety rules, regulations, and practices.

  • To use skilled care, use, and safe operation of a variety of hand tools, power tools, and light-duty maintenance equipment.

  • Perform basic, routine maintenance and manual tasks.

  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

  • Read and interpret manuals, instructions, drawings, and equipment specifications.

  • Troubleshoot and identify problems.

  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted within the course of work.

  • Input, prepare, and maintain records and reports using a computer.

  • Coordinate multiple projects and complex tasks simultaneously.

Supplemental Information

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor field environments; travel from site to site; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, potentially hazardous chemicals, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work in or around water; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and twist; push, pull, lift, and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weights; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized hand and power tools and equipment; operate assigned equipment and vehicles; verbally communicate to exchange information.
