Amazon Sr. Ocean Program Manager - Transportation and Logistics, Project Kuiper in Redmond, Washington

Description

Project Kuiper is an initiative to increase global broadband access through a constellation of over 3,000 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO). Its mission is to bring fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world. Project Kuiper will help close the digital divide by delivering fast, affordable broadband to a wide range of customers, including consumers, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in places without reliable connectivity.

We are seeking an experienced Sr. Ocean Program Manager to lead and oversee the ocean logistics and transportation strategies for Amazon's Kuiper satellite program. This role will be responsible for managing end-to-end ocean freight operations, ensuring compliance with international shipping regulations, and developing robust logistics solutions for critical satellite components and equipment. The ideal candidate will drive operational excellence while maintaining the highest standards of safety, security, and reliability in ocean transportation.

Export Control Requirements

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key job responsibilities

Strategic Program Management:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive ocean logistics strategies for satellite components and equipment

  • Lead end-to-end ocean freight operations, including carrier management and performance

  • Design and optimize shipping routes and schedules to meet program milestones

  • Establish contingency plans and risk mitigation strategies

  • Create and maintain ocean logistics budgets and forecasts

Operational Excellence:

  • Manage relationships with ocean carriers, freight forwarders, and key logistics partners

  • Oversee customs compliance and international trade requirements

  • Drive continuous improvement in ocean logistics processes and procedures

  • Establish and track KPIs for ocean transportation performance

  • Implement best practices for handling sensitive and high-value cargo

Stakeholder Management:

  • Collaborate with internal teams (Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Launch)

  • Coordinate with external partners (ports, customs brokers, carriers)

  • Provide regular updates to leadership on program status and risks

  • Manage escalations and resolve complex logistics challenges

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders

A day in the life

  1. Transportation Planning:
  • Develop comprehensive ocean transportation plans

  • Coordinate with carriers for specialized equipment needs

  • Manage transit time requirements and scheduling

  • Implement tracking and visibility solutions

  1. Compliance & Documentation:
  • Ensure proper documentation for international shipments

  • Maintain compliance with export/import regulations

  • Oversee customs clearance processes

  • Manage shipping permits and certifications

  1. Risk Management:
  • Develop contingency plans for potential disruptions

  • Manage cargo insurance requirements

  • Implement security protocols for high-value shipments

  • Monitor and mitigate supply chain risks

  1. Performance Management:
  • Establish carrier performance metrics

  • Track and report on logistics KPIs

  • Analyze and optimize transportation costs

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in ocean logistics and transportation

  • 5+ years of program management experience

  • Deep understanding of international shipping regulations and compliance

  • Experience managing high-value, sensitive cargo transportation

  • Strong track record of implementing logistics solutions at scale

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, or Business Administration

  • Experience in aerospace/satellite industry logistics

  • Knowledge of ITAR and EAR regulations

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

  • Experience with logistics technology platforms and TMS systems

  • Background in risk management and insurance for high-value cargo

  • Experience managing budgets >$10M

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $133,200/year in our lowest geographic market up to $220,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
