Microsoft Corporation Principal Applied Scientist in Redmond, Washington

The Core Search and AI team is the leading applied machine learning team at Microsoft responsible for delivering the highest-quality search experience to over hundreds of millions monthly active users around the world in Microsoft’s search engine, Bing and other dependent search engines such as Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and startups like Neeva.  We are responsible for the largest machine learning models at Microsoft by volume and take pride in being the first in the world to solve many practical AI at Scale challenges.

As a Principal Applied Scientist in Core Search and AI team, you will be working on cutting-edge machine learning and LLM technology to improve online engagement of Bing Search. We have many exciting problems here to solve like leveraging LLM for relevance improvement and training data collection, building SOTA large scale NN models and feature processing framework, use reinforcement learning to drive user retention etc. This opportunity will allow you to work on the latest and innovative areas and help you develop skills in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, data science and Large-Scale systems.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct applied science experiments, create and validate metrics, develop ML pipeline and modeling algorithm.

  • Define metrics that measure the quality of user experience and satisfaction.

  • Develop and apply cutting-edge machine learning models and ranking algorithms that match user intent and preferences.

  • Design and maintain a robust and scalable ranking infrastructure that can serve the ranking models efficiently and safely.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience with learning new techniques from textbooks or research papers and applying them to relevant business problems.

  • Experience in Machine learning in deep learning projects.

  • Experience in recommendation algorithms or natural language processing

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check :This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.

  • 7+ years' experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).

  • 5+ years' experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.

  • 5+ years' experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

  • Expereince in design and problem-solving, and a commitment to quality and engineering excellence at scale.

  • Expereince in communication, collaboration, and analysis, and be able to execute effectively across team collaborations.

  • Experience in recommendation algorithms or natural language processing is an advantage.]

Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
