Microsoft Corporation Principal Applied Scientist in Redmond, Washington

The Microsoft AI (Artificial Intelligence) Web Data team is looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to help us build the next generation platform for Bing and Microsoft AI. In Web Data, we are on a mission to build the most vast and accurate model of the Web to power search and AI. We are pushing frontiers of scalability and index quality by creating models and systems for discovering, storing, processing Web content, and operating AI solutions. Our core set of engineering challenges includes:

  • Discovering diverse content on the Web quickly and efficiently by understanding the structure and dynamics of the Web and optimizing crawl scheduling;

  • Building Big Data pipelines, creating ML and AI models for index selection, and determining document quality;

  • Designing and implementing models and pipelines for near-real time (NRT) indexing and content freshness;

  • Designing and implementing methods for leveraging AI in platform and backend solutions.

You will work on the design, development, execution, and implementation of technology research projects. You will use scientific principles and techniques to develop, evaluate, operate, and/or deploy algorithms and solutions to improve or contribute to the creation of features and models with the highest system performance, quality, data management, and accuracy.

Responsibilities

  • You will master a broad area or research and understand any applicable research techniques. You’ll also serve as a team expert on changes in industry trends, products, and other advances, and apply this knowledge to influence product needs.

  • You will review business and product requirement, incorporate research, and provide strategic direction for problem solving. You’ll also ensure scientific rigor, support the development of methods, and apply your expertise to support business impact.

  • You will identify and inspire peers and new research talent to join Microsoft, build relationships, and advocate for research initiatives. You’ll share research findings through industry outreach, collaborate with the academic community, and help develop the recruiting pipeline.

  • You will document work and experimentation results and share findings to promote innovation. You’ll provide guidance when capturing processes and contribute to ethics and privacy policies related to research processes and data collection.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 6+ years of experience with artificial intelligence and data science including machine learning, deep learning, data mining, and natural language processing

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).

  • 2+ years experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.

  • 5+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).

  • 3+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.

  • 3+ years experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
