The Senior Director, Biosurgery R&D serves as a strategic member of Wound Closure and Biosurgery R&D Leadership Team. They will ensure the alignment, accountability and focus needed for effective execution of critical R&D projects and strategies to deliver growth. They will represent R&D in identifying growth opportunities in partnership with Global Strategic Marketing and Business Development. S/he will lead a team of R&D Scientists and Engineers responsible for the early innovation, onboarding, and commercial launch of R&D programs in a key growth platform. This role requires strong collaboration and partnership across R&D, Global Strategic Marketing, Scientific Affairs, Supply Chain, and Business Development.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for execution for Biosurgery NPD programs from onboarding through stabilization (post-launch)

  • Accountable for evaluating trade-off decisions to help the team handle the triple constraint (time, scope, resources) and for appropriate resolution of challenges

  • Leads technical functional leaders (formulation, process, etc.) to ensure prioritization and technical delivery for Biosurgery NPD programs

  • Identifies capability gaps and leads development of build/buy plans

  • Coaches, mentors and guides R&D team to create a culture of candor, operational excellence and project execution

  • Develops knowledge of technical platforms in other parts of Johnson & Johnson and establishes relationships with key groups that have strategic alignment

  • Identifies growth opportunities in partnership with Global Strategic Marketing and Business Development.

  • Owns Goals & Objectives (G&O) definition for Biosurgery R&D deliverables, ensuring alignment amongst cross functional partners for key initiatives, goals, and strategies through shared G&O’s and KPIs

  • Develops leadership team charter, scope and meeting agendas and cadence. Ensures agenda driven membership, meetings and efficient/effective decision making

  • Monitors and tracks action items and plans to ensure rapid follow-through and progress against commitments

  • Collaborates with Program Leadership to champion team effectiveness, empowerment culture, urgency, accountability, achievement, and decision making

  • Ensures an environment of collaboration; open/safe challenges and risk discussions

  • Provides career development, performance management, and coaching to assist in talent development

  • Fosters teamwork, diversity, and inclusion within team, between teams and other groups

  • The role inspires and provides team member motivation and recognition

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred in the areas of Materials Science, Biomedical, Mechanical and/or Polymer Engineering

  • 10+ years of experience within one of the following areas: Research & Development leadership, healthcare technical environment and/or driving strategic planning and relationships is required

  • Regulated industry experience is required, preferably in the fields of medical device or pharmaceutical industry

  • Strong technical expertise and a proven business acumen within strategic planning and execution is required

  • Proven success in partnering and influencing across a matrix environment

  • Proven effective change leadership skills

  • Demonstrated comfort with ambiguity

  • A proven ability to actively develop talent and culture to achieve both results and a robust talent pipeline

Up to 25% Domestic and International travel may be required
