Cordova Recreation & Parks District Lifeguard I in Rancho Cordova, California

Typical Schedule:

20-30 hours a week from March through October; shifts available every day of the week including holidays.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under direction of the Recreation Supervisor II,Senior RecreationCoordinator, and pool management,performs a full range oflifeguard services during public sessions and swim instruction classes; protects life, prevents accidents, and enforces pool regulations; responds appropriatelyin the event of an accident/emergency;performs a variety ofdaily maintenance assignments, such as hosing, sweeping, andcleaning restrooms; and performs related workas required.Lifeguards are also responsible for teaching swim lessons.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Lifeguard I is the working level in the lifeguard series. Lifeguard I is distinguished from the higher level class of Lifeguard II - Assistant Pool Manager in that the latter provides lead directions and assumes responsibility for the operation of a pool facility in the absences of the Pool Manager.

Established in 1958, Cordova Recreation and Park District (CRPD) is an independent special district governed by an elected Board of Directors.

We provide quality recreational programs, parks and services for our diverse and growing region. We currently operate over 50 parks and facilities across more than 600 acres of urban and open space. We also operate Cordova Golf Course which is a full-service 18-Hole course with a lighted driving range, pro-shop and lessons from PGA professionals. We host dozens of events throughout the year and provide athletic, educational and creative outlets for children and adults of all ages.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

  • Observe swimmer and non-swimmers in the pool area from assigned station to identify and prevent unsafe conditions or potential hazards.
  • Supervise patrons and participants in pool and deck area.
  • Promote and enforce safety procedures; renders care in the most current American Red Cross techniques in water safety, lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR/AED to person in need of assistance.
  • Use strong customer service and demonstrate interpersonal skills during public contact during the conduct of activities.
  • Prepare detailed and complete written reports including accident and incident reports.
  • Acts as Department representative to local residents, community groups, private businesses, and others concerning questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of recreation programs and facility operations.
  • Attend all trainings when provided.
  • Assist in the general upkeep of pool and office area and surrounding facility including hosing, sweeping, and cleaning restrooms.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Rescue persons using lifeguard techniques.

  • Prepare written reports and records.
  • Assist with daily maintenance of the swimming facility.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
