ElectriCities of North Carolina Senior Power Delivery Engineer in Raleigh, North Carolina

Overview

Join our dynamic Operations Division and play a pivotal role in supporting the Power Agencies of North Carolina!

As part of our team, you will be at the forefront of managing wholesale power supply, load management, distributed generation, and renewable resources for North Carolina Municipal Power Agency No. 1 (NCMPA1) and North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency (NCEMPA). Work alongside industry leaders and be instrumental in ensuring seamless delivery interconnections with Duke Energy.

Responsibilities

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Wholesale Account Coordination: Liaise with Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, and Dominion Energy on delivery point interconnections, ensuring accuracy in replacement costs, depreciation methods, allocation factors, and leased facilities charges.

  • Policy Expertise: Act as the authority on Distributed Generation Policy, Qualified Resources Policy, and Recommended Interconnection Standards. Enforce policies by reviewing engineering specifications, directing meter installations, and maintaining crucial records.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure electrical and environmental compliance of NCMPA1 and NCEMPA distributed generation. Maintain knowledge of NESC and NFPA codes, EPA and NCDEQ Air Quality Standards, and NERC Reliability Standards.

  • Engineering Support: Provide engineering support for communication lines related to meter installations, NCEMPA and NCMPA1 Diesel Generators, customer metering projects, and telemetry systems. Keep thorough documentation.

  • 24/7 On-Call Support: Participate in the on-call team, addressing system conditions, operator needs, equipment failures, and other emergencies. Monitor and control distributed generation, manage repairs, and make critical decisions affecting power supply and customer service.

  • Communication Systems Coordination: Document and coordinate communication connections at delivery points and generator sites. Work with telephone and cable companies on high voltage protection equipment and assist in maintaining the backup Operations Center.

  • Outage Coordination: Serve as the point of contact during major storms or weather events, coordinating with members and Transmission Providers.

  • Project Management: Provide project management and engineering support for municipal projects, including planning, scheduling, distribution studies, expansion projects, financial analyses, and presentations to city councils.

  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Foster a collaborative environment, working effectively with other departments, employees, participants, and investor-owned utilities.

  • Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Manager, Projects and Contracts, aligned with the goals of ElectriCities, NCEMPA, and NCMPA1.

    Controls:

    The Senior Power Delivery Engineer will work under the general supervision of the Manager, Projects and Contracts, who provides periodic performance reviews and professional guidance as needed. The Manager, Projects and Contracts approves all vacation and other time off. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

    Physical Requirements:

    The Senior Power Delivery Engineer must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform tasks in an office setting such as operating a personal computer, keyboards, and other peripheral equipment. Frequent day travel is required throughout NC with some occasional overnight travel. The ability to support emergency or operational needs outside of normal working hours, including nights and weekends, as necessary is also required.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.

  • 5+ years in an electrical utility environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Familiarity with EPA and DEQ air quality regulations and standards is a plus.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, accept responsibility, and work independently in field locations with remote guidance.

  • A working knowledge of meter and substation concepts desired.
