Position Summary: JMT is seeking a Party Chief- Field Surveys to join their team in Raleigh, North Carolina. The successful candidate will be responsible for the accurate and efficient collection of various types of survey data, Under the direction of a Licensed Land Surveyor. The position requires the party chief to work closely with and lead a land survey crew in the field during the location of vertical and horizontal control, topographic, as-built, and boundary surveys as well as construction stake-out. They may assist with calculations for plat/map production and assist in use of source data, such as surveying data and notes, aerial photography, satellite data, or other maps to show topographical features, political boundaries, and other features. They also may verify accuracy and completeness of plats/maps. This position works closely with project managers and technicians during creation of base mapping and plans for the construction of various types of transportation, energy and civil/site projects including, but not limited to, the following: roadways, bridges, energy facilities, parks, commercial and private developments. U.S. Residency and valid Driver's license Required.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Research legal records, look for evidence of boundaries, and assist with the analysis of the data to determine the location of boundary lines
Collect data relevant to the shape, contour, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features
Preparation of detailed and neatly written field notes during field survey
Compile raw data, notes and pictures and upload to project folder
Competent in the use of:
GPS: Static, RTK and VRS
Total Stations: Conventional and Robotic
Levels: optical and electronic
Data collectors and programs
Computers and software for surveying
Accompanies and oversees work of a field crew, conducting complete assignments or portions of a large and diverse project while organizing field operations and collecting data to ensure efficacy and accuracy
Reviews project specifications and confers with surveyor or engineer concerning assistance required such as plan preparation, acceptance testing, and evaluation of field conditions, design changes, and reports
Performs non-routine assignments involving substantial variety and complexity
Performs surveying duties not requiring licensure
Computes volumes and prepares graphs
Performs supervisory responsibilities on a job specific basis

Occasional travel as needed
Required Skills
Ability to use applicable survey instrumentation and software programs required for gathering field data and organizing data for submission to the Land Surveyor. Uses Computer Assisted Drafting software
Mathematical Skills including the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
Knowledge of all positions on the crew and capability to utilize all equipment
Required Experience
High school diploma or equivalent
3 + years’ experience in a surveying
Experience with Total Stations and data collectors, preferably Trimble, TDS and Carlson, and GPS receivers
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the field 90% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be mainly conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
Work is performed within a general office environment 10% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
Travel expected 20% of the time.
