Summary of Duties:

The Hentges laboratory studies the underpinnings and consequences of detrimental food and drug intake (substance use disorder, obesity, anorexia). We explore hedonic and homeostatic drives with a primary interest in synaptic signaling in homeostatic and reward circuits. The primary methods used in the lab are patch clamp electrophysiology in brain slices, retrograde labeling by stereotaxic microinjection, opto- and chemogenetics, immunofluorescence and confocal imaging. Successful candidates will maintain a multi-line transgenic mouse colony, will perform survival surgeries in mice, will process tissue and be involved in the general operation of the laboratory including purchasing, management of hazardous waste, documentation and organization of supplies and protocols. Position requires spending the majority of the time in identifying and defining research problems, designing approaches or hypothesis and methodology, designing specific phases of research projects, analyzing results, developing conclusions and hypothesis, and/or presenting research results in publishable form.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

• A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.

 

• Experimental and analytical skills, understanding and knowledge of research theory, excellent organizational and project management skills, demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Experience with electrophysiology, mouse husbandry, and any or all of the the following: opto-/chemogenetics, immunofluorescence, stereotaxic microinjection, confocal imaging, general lab management and compliance proficiency.

Monthly Salary:

 

$3,750 - $5,400 | Salary dependent upon experience and education.

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
