Join Our Team: Newsroom Editorial Assistant at The Daily Universe (part-time 17.5 hrs/week)

Are you passionate about journalism and eager to help shape the next generation of reporters? Do you have a keen eye for detail and a love for the AP style? The Daily Universe, the student-run digital newsroom at the School of Communications, is looking for a dynamic and organized Newsroom Editorial Assistant to join our team!

As part of a curricular lab, The Daily Universe provides hands-on training in journalism, multimedia, and sports media. This half-time position (approximately 17 hours per week) offers a unique opportunity to work closely with students, faculty, and staff to ensure the production of high-quality news content while honing your editing and mentoring skills.

What you will be doing in this position:

  • Editorial Support: Assist with copy editing news and sports stories to ensure accuracy, clarity, and adherence to AP style.

  • Training & Mentorship: Conduct training sessions for student journalists on AP style, providing guidance and feedback to help them develop their skills.

  • Collaboration: Work with faculty, staff, and student editors to maintain editorial standards and help ensure all content is ready for publication.

  • Newsletter Assistance: Assist in the editing and publishing of The Daily Universe newsletter, ensuring it's accurate and engaging.

  • Magazine Management: Help manage the circulation of the Daily Universe Magazine, working with student employees to distribute it across campus, and assist with managing rack ad spaces.

  • Contest Coordination: Help compile entries for prestigious journalism contests, including SPJ, BEA, Hearst, and more, working alongside faculty and students to showcase their best work.

What qualifies you for this role:

  • Strong attention to detail, particularly in editing and proofreading.

  • Familiarity with AP style and journalism best practices.

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.

  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and mentoring.

  • Interest in journalism and media, particularly in a student-driven environment.

Pay Level: 47
