Educational Testing Service Director, IT - Data Governance in Princeton, New Jersey

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Data Governance Director is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of an ETS data governance framework and strategy, policies, and procedures. This role ensures that data across the organization is managed and used in a way that maintains its integrity, quality, and security. The Director will work closely with data stewards, IT, compliance, and business units to establish and enforce data governance frameworks that support the organization's goals and regulatory requirements.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy and Leadership:

• Develop and execute a comprehensive data governance strategy aligned with the organization's objectives.

• Lead the creation and maintenance of data governance policies, standards, and frameworks.

• Provide leadership and direction to the data governance team, ensuring alignment with broader business strategies.

Data Quality and Integrity:

• Establish and enforce data quality standards and metrics.

• Monitor data quality issues and lead initiatives to improve data accuracy and reliability.

• Implement data validation and cleansing processes.

Data Stewardship and Management:

• Lead the data stewardship program, defining roles and responsibilities.

• Oversee the creation and management of data dictionaries, metadata repositories, and data catalogs.

• Ensure consistent data definitions and usage across the organization.

Process and Tool Establishment:

• Develop and implement standardized processes for data governance, ensuring they are scalable and sustainable.

• Evaluate, select, and implement data governance tools and technologies that support data quality, data management, and compliance initiatives.

• Work with technology peers to integrate data governance tools with existing systems and workflows.

Collaboration and Communication:

• Collaborate with data stewards, business units, and IT to understand data needs and challenges.

• Foster a culture of data governance and stewardship across the organization.

• Communicate data governance policies and procedures to stakeholders at all levels.

Compliance and Security:

• Ensure data governance practices comply with relevant regulations, standards, and best practices (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).

• Work with IT and security teams to protect sensitive data and prevent data breaches.

• Oversee data access and usage policies to ensure appropriate data handling and privacy protection.

Performance Measurement and Reporting:

• Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for data governance initiatives.

• Prepare regular reports on data governance activities, progress, and outcomes.

• Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership.

• Adhere to ethical standards and comply with the laws and regulations applicable to your job function.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

• Proven leadership skills – attracts, develops, and motivates talent needed for current and future business needs; articulates an inspiring vision for the future; establishes high performance expectations and holds teams accountable for achieving results

• Strong relationship building, influencing, and consultation skills, with an ability to establish and maintain positive work relationships with peers, management, key stakeholders and partners

• Strong understanding of data quality management, data security, and compliance standards

• Certification in data governance (e.g., CDMP, DGSP).

• Ability to influence and drive change across the organization.

• Proficiency with data governance tools and technologies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s or Masters degree in Business Administration, Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field

• Or an equivalent combination of education and experience to constitute a similar level of expertise.

• Bachelor’s degree + 8 years of experience in relevant field OR Master’s degree + 6 years of experience in relevant field

• Experience with data governance frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK

• Familiarity with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA)

• Experience in data management, data governance, or a related field

• Experience managing teams with diverse data and analytics roles
