The Aquatics Assistant is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of Princeton’s swimming pools and campus fountains. As part of a Division I athletic program it is the expectation that all facilities will be maintained to the highest possible standards.
Schedules and duties assigned are event driven and can vary from season to season as well as day to day. The Aquatics Assistant must have a thorough understanding of the department’s different aquatic facilities and equipment that is necessary to run a Division I athletic department. In addition, they are expected to develop a complete understanding of the requirements for competition for the aquatic varsity sports and numerous club and intramural programs that utilize the facilities. The Aquatics Assistant will work both independently and collaboratively as well as utilize problem solving and troubleshooting skills when necessary in order to diagnose and make repairs on equipment as needed. In addition, they are expected to provide excellent customer service by interacting with coaches, staff, and visiting teams as well as making appropriate decisions with minimal supervision.

ResponsibilitiesGeneral Upkeep of the DeNunzio and Dillon Pool Buildings:
- * Sweep, Mop, and Sanitize the pool deck and facility.
- * Sweep and Mop the Spectator Stands.
- * Empty Trash Cans.
- * Move and Set up equipment based on the needs of the facility.
- * Assist with salting and shoveling around facility as needed during winter storms.
- * Perform pool chemical checks and fill out chemical logbooks as required by the NJ Department of Health.
- * Maintain pool chemicals within ranges required by the NJ Department of Health.
- * Add and alter pool chemicals as needed including calibration of chemical controllers.
- * Transport equipment and chemicals as needed between pools and fountains.
- * Maintain pool filtration systems including backwashing and cleaning strainers as needed.
- * Perform pool maintenance tasks such as vacuuming, skimming, etc.
- * Complete daily setup of the pool including lane lines, flags, bulkheads, starting blocks, etc.
- * Maintain the diving boards and diving facility.
- * Set up pool and facility as needed for special events including tables, chairs, bleachers, stanchions, platforms, etc.
- * Move bulkheads, lane lines, flags, starting blocks, etc. as needed for special events.
- * Set up, test, and troubleshoot timing equipment, scoreboards, public address systems, and diving judging systems.
- * Coordinate setup needs with supervisor and coaches so that event setups have minimal interference with daily practices and activities.
- * Cover events as scheduled including nights and weekends.
- * Clean up and breakdown events quickly and efficiently.
- * Perform minor maintenance to make repairs on equipment and within facilities including assembly and installation of equipment as well as demolition and removal of equipment.
- * Troubleshoot and repair equipment such as scoreboards, public address systems, timing systems, machinery, and equipment related to the different athletic programs, etc.
- * Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain pool equipment such as lane lines, bulkheads, diving boards, starting blocks, etc.
- * Move equipment around facility or between facilities as needed.
- * Assist with securing facilities and equipment as needed at the conclusion of a scheduled shift.
- * Provide excellent customer service by serving as a point of contact for coaches, staff, external rental groups, outside contractors, etc. to include facility setup and general information.
- * Work with outside contractors and University trades as needed as it relates to the general upkeep of the swimming pools.
- * Work both independently and collaboratively as well as utilize problem solving and troubleshooting skills when necessary in order to diagnose and make repairs on equipment as needed.
Maintain University fountains as needed including:
- * Clean, vacuum, skim fountains.
- * Perform chemical checks.
- * Maintain chemicals including adding and adjusting chemical levels.
- * Backwash and clean filters as needed.
- * High school diploma or GED.
- * Ability to demonstrate dependability and flexibility as the Athletic Department requires a flexible work schedule that varies season by season. Regular time hours may include weekends and nights as required by the Athletic Department. The ability to work overtime as needed may be required.
- * Demonstrated ability to make decisions and work with minimal supervision.
- * Valid driver's license.
- * Swimming pool experience
- * Certified Pool Operators license or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- * Lifeguard Certified or ability to become certified within 90 days of employment.
- * Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, administrators, staff, coaches, officials, and the general public.
- * Adherence to Ivy League and NCAA rules and regulations is required.
Preferred:
- * Strong familiarity with the operations of the various electronic and/or mechanical equipment in order to perform minor adjustments in the event of breakdown and/or failure.
- * Basic familiarity with hand tools and a high level of mechanical aptitude.
- * Strong familiarity with the various aquatic sports (swimming, diving, water polo), including the layout and NCAA requirements for each sport.
- * Previous experience in an NCAA athletic environment.
