Summary The Geriatrics certified Recreation Therapist (RT) is assigned to the Community Living Center (CLC) at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, MO. Recreation Therapist (RT) provides treatment interventions incorporating the four-step process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient treatment services. Duties: Clinical: Evaluates, establishes goals based on evaluation findings, and develops treatment interventions. Implements and modifies as necessary treatment plan and goals throughout course of treatment to ensure optimum outcomes. The Recreation Therapist/Creative Arts Therapist is expected to perform documentation of patient care including assessments, progress notes, encounters, consultations, care plans, and other reports as needed. Uses Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy expertise for direct service delivery to patients. Acts as a subject matter expert to staff, students, and other healthcare professionals. Serves as Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapist representative on interdisciplinary teams as assigned or needed. In consultation with patients, their families, and caregivers, Recreation Therapist/Creative Arts Therapist shall educate as required regarding treatment interventions and goals, in addition to any consideration involving adaptations to better ensure optimal treatment outcomes. Demonstrates ability and competency in treating patients that range in age from young adult to geriatric who may experience complex medical or mental health issues. Administration: Reviews and updates other staff members to significant research findings in the area of Geriatric treatment protocols through his/her attendance/participation in continued educational courses/conference within the field of Geriatric conditions and diagnoses. Understands and expresses the significance and purpose of all Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy disciplines (Recreation, Art, Music, Dance, Drama). Promotes each discipline equally and positively. Encourages and fosters collaborative programming among the disciplines. Understands and can communicate information regarding productivity data and standards, national benchmarks and clinic development. Attends various Hospital, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy in-services. Provides orientations and in-services to staff and students especially those involved with Geriatrics. Understands the significance of research and, when possible, participates in research activities. Serves as a resource person to the community in matters relating to Recreation Therapy/Creative Arts Therapy and Geriatrics to the needs of the Veteran population. Adheres with Hospital established standards, policies and procedures set forth by section, service and medical center. Manages resources (time, materials, staff) in a cost- effective manner. Assists program and service line in achieving compliance with regulatory agency standards, including state, federal, CARF, LTCI and Joint Commission standards. Abides by VA and HIPAA patient confidentiality regulations in documentation, consultation and release of information. Actively participates in hospital committees and task forces. Initiates service recovery when patients or caregivers report complaints or concerns. Supports Performance Improvement activities by identifying processes to be improved, participating in the development of monitoring indicators and evaluation criteria, collecting data, implementing process changes, monitoring outcomes and initiating corrective actions. Qualifications Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. The following education requirements apply to the recreation therapist. (a) A bachelor's degree or higher, from an accredited college or university, with a major in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure, with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation. The degree must be approved by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); OR, (b) A bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS). The degree must be approved by the NCTRC. If hired under this education, the certification cannot be waived. Certification, Applicants must be certified in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the NCTRC. Grade Determinations: Recreation Therapist, GS-12: (a) Experience. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, completion of two years of progressively complex experience, which includes one year equivalent to the next lower grade directly related to the position being filled. AND, (b) Certification. Additional certification in a specialty treatment area in recreation therapy, such as, but not limited to: Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation, Geriatrics, Developmental Disabilities, Behavioral Health, Community Inclusion Services, Aquatic Exercise Therapy/Aquatic Therapy, Adapted Sports, Assisted Technology, Social Skills, etc., or in a directly related field such as, but not limited to: acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, dementia, dialectical behavioral therapy, gambling disorder, motivational interviewing, and/or wellness recovery action plan facilitator. (c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: i. Knowledge of best practice and evidence-based recreation therapy across multiple areas of practice. ii. Ability to perform clinical services and balance organizational responsibilities while developing and implementing effective strategies with great autonomy, at a level compatible with the critical necessity for accuracy and completion. iii. Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment to the complexity of the diagnosis or disability and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in- depth specific assessment. iv. Skill in developing, implementing, and modifying recreation therapy treatment plans in response to changing medical, physical, mental, psychological and/or psychosocial conditions, as well as comorbidities. v. Ability to provide clinical guidance using the advanced knowledge of best practice and evidence-based recreation therapy implementation across multiple areas of practice. vi. Knowledge of how recreation therapy impacts revenue resource allocation, as it relates to complex diagnosis, treatment, and diagnostic coding. Reference: VHA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G60. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing a weight of 35 pounds in accordance with the Safe Patient Handling Program Directive 2010-032 . Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
