About Mertz Manufacturing

Mertz Manufacturing, Inc., founded in 1927 in Ponca City, OK, designs and builds a wide range of custom steel fabricated products. The majority of our products are custom designed trailers to serve as the mobile platform for our customers specialized equipment, typically used in the Oil & Gas industry. We also build stationary structures to house or transport equipment. Very often, our products involve complicated electronics and hydraulics to achieve the results our customers require.

All of our products are custom designed and built to our customers exacting specifications for the quantities and delivery times the customer requires. Frequently, customers approach Mertz with an idea for a product to fill a unique business need with little more than a sketch to work from. Mertz has consistently been able to work with our customers to find unique and affordable solutions to their complex problems. Mertz ability to take a customer idea from inception through design, prototyping, and final production with the highest commitment to quality and safety have earned our customers trust.

Just under half of our workforce consists of welders followed by almost equal numbers of painters, machinists, assembly mechanics, and steel cutting and forming workers. We also have a design team and other support functions that provide essential services such as purchasing, quality control, inventory, and IT.

Shipping Assistant Position

Works with supervisor and coworkers while increasing knowledge in the Shipping department. Checks bills of lading for correct information- serial numbers, job order numbers, address and weight. Moves parts from all areas of the shop to their next location.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates and utilizes lifting aids as necessary to perform work.
  • Knows how to build boxes for overseas shipments.
  • Able to dip, wrap, and spray parts for rust prevention.
  • Sets a consistent standard of quality and quantity in all work performed including crating and packaging of shipments, the operation of fork lifts, hoists, trucks, and cherry pickers.
  • Turns in parts to stock and moves them to correct locations.
  • Checks parts in from outside contracts, making sure all paper work is completed.
  • Must be able to see things to do and work more on own without close supervision.
  • Knows how to load trucks and boom the load down.
  • Checks the hours to make sure the fork lifts and trucks get regular service.

Position Qualifications

  • Excellent speaking, writing and listening skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-demand environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), with emphasis on Excel.
  • Lean Manufacturing experience is preferred.

Regular Requirements:Twist at the neck and trunk; bend and reach, below and above shoulder level, repetitive use of fingers and hands to grasp and/or operate equipment; lift/move up to 50 pounds; walk up and down flights of stairs. Walk, reach with hands and arms overhead, above shoulder and horizontally.

Safety-Sensitive Work Environment:This is a manufacturing plant environment. Mertz has an established workplace safety program to provide a healthful, safe and environmentally compliant work environment for employees, customers and visitors. Its success depends on the alertness and personal commitment of all. Safety-critical tas ks are performed throughout the facility on a daily basis. These jobs include operating forklifts, overhead cranes, heavy equipment operation and tasks involving high levels of cognitive function and judgment. An employee in this position could be subject to exposure to dirt, dust, noise, vibration, moving objects, mechanical parts, and equipment hazards. Proper personal protective equipment must be worn in designated areas at all times. An employee in this position must demonstrate an understanding of safety procedures and the ability to work in a safety-sensitive environment.

Other Requirements

Typically, 3-4 years of experience or equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities are preferred.
