Texas Health Plano is seeking to hire Junior 2 and Senior level nursing students for our 7 week Nurse Extern Program.
This is a paid, 7-week Externship that focuses on the Extern learning the role of the RN in an acute care setting. This program brings together students and preceptors in a unique, one-on-one clinical partnership where mentor relationships strengthen the students’ awareness of nursing scope of practice and critical thinking skills. Students in this program receive a mix of on-unit and off-unit learning to develop their communication and interpersonal skills and assist with procedures and treatments.

Work hours:
PRN/As needed: up to 36 hours per week
Variable Day Shifts; 7A - 7P
Must be available to attend the 7-week summer program starting June 2nd - July 25 th . If selected to participate in the THP Nurse Extern 2025 program, attendance is mandatory.
The remaining 6-weeks (3- two-week rotations) will be spent shadowing a RN preceptor. Externs will rotate through a variety of units with the opportunity to choose one rotation in Specialty Areas such as Critical Care, Emergency Department, and Women and Infants.

Here’s What You Need
H.S. Diploma or Equivalent Required
Experience, none Required
CNA - Certified Nurses Aide Upon Hire Required Or
THR Approved PCT Training Program Upon Hire Required Or
Junior I or higher level Professional Nursing student with proof of completion on nursing fundamentals. Upon Hire Required And
BSN candidates preferred
BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly Required
Possesses organizational skills to function in a fast paced work environment, positive interpersonal skills, and good verbal and written communication skills
What You Will Do
CARE OF PATIENT/TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Provides assistance to patient according to plan of care.
Collects patient data, identifies and reports significant findings to nurse.
Assists in admission/transfer/discharge.
Provides and Revises patient activities of daily living based on patient/family preferences.
Performs technical procedures safely and proficiently.
Takes action to reduce or eliminate patient risk.
Enters orders into computer or manual system if applicable.
Documents accurately and appropriately.
In collaboration/consultation with the nurse, adapts care to reflect patient population.
In collaboration/consultation with nurse, incorporates cultural/religious needs and beliefs into delivery of care.
Keeps patient environment clean and maintains safe environment.
Anticipates patient/family and visitor needs and takes action to meet those needs and rounds as appropriate
