Summary:

  • The O.R. Assistant assists in the delivery of patient care by performing various activities and related support services under the supervision of the Director, Operating Room Manager or charge nurse. The O.R. Assistant is responsible for the safe transport/transfer of patients to, from, and within the surgical suite. In addition, the O.R. assistant is responsible for between case and terminal cleaning, and general cleaning duties. The O.R. Assistant is also responsible for the stocking of supplies.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in moving, transporting, and positioning patients in pre-op, procedural, and post-operative areas.

  • Properly identifies patient using two identifiers prior to any and all transports

  • Assists in maintaining and obtaining equipment necessary for procedural cases.

  • Identifies, communicates, and removes defective equipment from the peri-operative area.

  • Maintain efficiency of unit which includes but limited to:

  • Cleaning rooms between cases o Stocking of all unit supplies.

  • Transporting of specimens within the facility.

  • Transports post-operative patients to the appropriate discharge location.

  • Scrubs on procedures to hold retractors under the direction of the proceduralist.

  • In order to qualify, the OR Assistant needs to:

  • Complete specialized training

  • Complete required mandatory competencies

  • Scrub on a minimum of 3 observed cases and be approved by the Departmental Manager

  • Age-Specific Knowledge & Skills – Possesses the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet patients’ physical, psychological and social needs with those growth and development levels/patient populations served within the department.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)

  • BLS Certification - required within 2 months of hire

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED

  • High school graduate / Vocational / GED - preferredprevious housekeeping/hospital experience (preferred).
