Description

The Pittsburg Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Business Manager located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is responsible for the managerial direction and leadership of the T&D business in Pittsburgh. Our T&D business includes Substation, Overhead Transmission, Distribution Modernization, Networks Integration and Automation, Underground & Submarine Cables, Pipeline and Facilities, Transportation Electrification and more. This position is also responsible for coordinating/developing opportunities with other Global Practices throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding regions. This position will be a part of our Great Lakes Region (GLR) management team. This person will work directly with the T&D GLR Global Practice Manager, GLR Office leadership, and Client Account teams. Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties as assigned by the T&D GLR Global Practice Manager and other senior management:

Safety: Adhere to and promote Burns & McDonnell’s safety programs, training, and policies for all Pittsburgh T&D projects as well as promote and manage the Corporate Safety & Health performance and training of project team members.

Business Development:

  • Identification and pursuit of T&D opportunities for the Pittsburgh Branch office and other offices within our GLR offices. This includes developing and tracking forecasted sales for new and existing clients.

  • Establish Burns & McDonnell’s position in the regional T&D Market. Collaborate with T&D GLR on increasing market share and profitable growth in the regional T&D Market.

  • Collaborate with T&D GLR and other Global Practices (GPs) on business development.

  • Develop strong, work-winning relationships with key current and prospective clients.

  • Maintain and leverage industry network to identify and pre-position for opportunities.

  • Identify and vet prospective clients including determination of alignment with Pittsburgh T&D and company financial performance expectations.

  • Drive or support, where required, the pursuit process including “go/no-go” decisions, win strategies, proposal staffing, pricing, contract terms and conditions, and risk-reviews.

  • Participate in and, when needed, drive EPC and Program Management sales process.

  • Lead the development and administration of the Pittsburgh T&D Business Plan applicable components of the T&D GLR Business Plan and Pittsburgh Business Plan.

  • Collaborate with T&D GLR leaders to leverage global resources to support Pittsburgh led projects.

  • Develop relationships with local supplier partners including local minority, women, and veteran owned businesses. This includes the strategic development of disadvantaged business partners that align with Burns & McDonnell and our clients vision of building up local suppliers to support our important design and construction projects.

Project Management/Portfolio Management/Technical/Execution

  • Provide overall management of projects from concept to completion including through siting, environmental, permitting, planning, estimating, engineering, right-of-way acquisition, project controls, bid phase services, procurement, constructability reviews, material management, construction management, and closeout.

  • Provide oversight and direction for all Pittsburgh T&D engineering projects including project management, project planning, scheduling, resource management, budgeting, profitability, financial performance, and the establishment/execution of critical project objectives.

  • Serve as project manager, when required, for strategic clients and opportunities.

  • Responsible for overseeing identification of project and portfolio risks, including administration of associated mitigation strategies, to provide for a portfolio that meets or exceeds goals.

  • Identify and oversee implementation of effective change management practices on projects. Proactively work through corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.

  • Identify and implement project management methods, procedures, tools, and technology to win new work and increase profitability on existing work.

  • Serve as a technical advisor, providing senior-level input and evaluation on engineering projects.

  • Advocate for quality and ensure that the corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented, including coordinating with the appropriate teams to assign quality control reviewers.

  • Advance and develop tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Organizational

  • Facilitate and engage in, when required, the recruitment, development, and retention of the market’s top-talent. Support the development of a collaborative and entrepreneurial office environment.

  • Recruit and develop center of excellence leads for individual business lines within T&D and other key areas of growth.

  • Oversee and engage in, when required, the training and development of project management, business development, and client management skillsets within the team.

  • Coordinate recruitment strategy and staff development with T&D GLR including development of organizational structure that facilitates continued growth of T&D in Pittsburgh.

  • Coordinate work for the practice, including making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Lead T&D resource coordination with GPs. Burns & McDonnell GPs include Global Facilities, Transportation, Environmental and Permitting, Construction, Water, Power, Aviation & Federal and 1898 & Co.

  • Identify and foster opportunities for cross-GP collaboration, including client relationships, business development, and project planning efforts.

  • Support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

  • Facilitate profitable and sound growth of T&D to achieve financial performance goals.

  • Train, develop, and mentor the Pittsburgh staff.

  • Develop leadership within the practice and assist with the overall leadership development within the office.

  • Organize, lead, and conduct the performance appraisal process for assigned staff.

  • Foster collaboration amongst T&D and Pittsburgh Employee Owners.

  • Interpret policies, procedures, and goals of the organization to staff.

  • Support Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.

  • Support local initiatives as required in Pittsburgh.

Qualifications

  • Minimum seven (7) years of related professional experience is required. Ten (10) years of professional experience is strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related degree from an accredited program required.

  • Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer is preferred.

  • Technical ability in or comprehensive understating of Transmission and Distribution Engineering Design and construction is strongly preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills.

  • Strong analytical skills, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

  • Ability to handle large volumes of work and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong understanding of business development and team building strongly preferred.

  • A basic understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles is required.

  • Employee management and development experience strongly preferred.
