Department: Underground FLSA Status:Nonexempt Starting rate:$41.40

Overall Purpose: Under semi-direct supervision, to perform semi-skilled manual work in connection with the inspection, maintenance and repair of transformers, supervisory units, switches, fuse blocks and similar equipment installed in vaults or manholes.

Job Responsibilities: Opens transformers and other equipment and inspects contact surfaces, air tightness of equipment, tightness of connections, condition of interlock and other mechanism, condition of oil, and similar items on vault equipment.

Makes minor repairs such as repairing oil leaks, repairing nipple joints, replacing small parts, installing packing in packing glands, renewing gaskets, and making elementary repairs on cables and transformer housing.

Checks the operation of temperature and pressure units and makes minor adjustments to insure proper signal operation.

Adjusts, checks and tests subway type switching equipment.

Clears, grounds and tags circuits and equipment.

Installs and removes booster transformers and phases transformer equipment for other workers.

At times, makes temporary splices on de-energized cables.

Paints equipment, seals ducts with compound, patches concrete surfaces, repairs vent gratings, cleans equipment and working areas and performs similar manual tasks.

Periodically, makes simple air tests of transformers, supervisory units, and similar vault equipment in connection with flood protection, sealing equipment against water leakage as required.

Makes power factor, temperature, voltage, and load tests as required, using small portable test equipment.

Obtains samples and analyzes transformer oil.

Operates portable motor-driven and hand-operated water and oil pumps, as required.

Prepares reports of inspections and of maintenance work performed.

As directed, performs miscellaneous manual duties in locating cable faults, and receives instructions in the various cable testing methods and procedures.

Prepares various routine reports on cable work from operating data.

Makes elementary electrolysis surveys, as requested.

Makes load tests and voltage checks on energized low-tension cable.

Instructs and directs the work of lesser grade workers.

Performs other work as assigned.

Tests atmosphere in enclosed/confined work areas and performs all work in accordance with current safety regulations and policies.

Education / Experience Requirements: Education equivalent to graduation from high school.

Must pass the company administered standardized aptitude test (CAST)

Good understanding of the construction and maintenance of subway equipment.

Good mechanical ability.

Ability to interpret and work from circuit maps.

Knowledge of established safety regulations and practices pertaining to underground work.

Some indicated ability to instruct and to direct the work of others.
