If this sounds like an environment you would thrive in, we have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Nuclear Materials Engineer in our global Fuel Materials Innovation team. Our group members are based in the USA and Europe, and we are part of Westinghouse's Fuel Engineering organization.

As a member of our team your main responsibility will be to develop materials for fuel assemblies for existing and future nuclear reactors. Our team's focus areas encompass materials for all parts of the fuel assemblies, from the ceramic uranium pellets to metallic components such as Zr-based fuel cladding, and surface coatings for Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF).

Your Day-to-Day

You will be one of our key experts in developing next generation materials solutions and your day-to-day activities will include:

Lead and facilitate development, testing, and characterization of advanced cladding materials, e.g., coating development, corrosion testing, mechanical testing, and physical property measurements in a laboratory environment. Perform analysis of test data and generate technical reports to document data related to cladding behavior. Support qualification of fuel and cladding materials, facilitating commercial lead test rod (LTR) irradiation campaigns, e.g., development of product specifications and engineering drawings, identification of quality assurance testing, and support of other manufacturing activities. Identify and define technical issues and challenges and drive successful resolution. Work collaboratively with our global team of engineers and technicians within Westinghouse, as well as with suppliers, and university and industry partners. Develop next generation fuel assembly materials solutions for existing and future nuclear reactors. Develop technologies and processes for manufacturing of fuel assembly components, e.g., Cold Spray Additive Manufactured (CSAM) fuel rod cladding. Support the licensing of fuel materials as well as fuel rod performance models and methods.

This role is placed at our Churchill facility near Pittsburgh, PA. Most of your working time will be spent at Churchill, but you will also be involved in development activities at Westinghouse Specialty Metals Plant in Blairsville, PA which manufactures zirconium-alloy tubing products. You will also have the possibility to work a portion of your working time from your home office.

Who you are

You have an advanced degree in materials and a strong scientific and engineering interest in the field. You have professional experience, an eagerness to further develop your skills and a drive to learn. As a successful candidate you will bring the following to the team: Masters in Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field with 4+ years of research experienc or equivalent combination of degree and experience, e.g., recently completed PhD studentship in the nuclear materials area. Research experience in materials science, mechanical testing, corrosion testing, irradiation testing, and/or post irradiation examination of nuclear fuel cladding materials. Experience with sample preparation, metallography, microstructural characterization, and analysis of materials behavior. Experience with corrosion behavior in metals, and fundamental metallurgy. Strong communication and cooperation skills. Enjoy working in challenging development projects, both independently and in teams. Professional working proficiency in English, both speaking and writing.
