East Asian Research Support Specialist

The East Asian Library (EAL) Research Support Specialist will provide high-quality customer service to ULS patrons, assist with locating materials related to East Asian studies, navigate the library stacks, and answer questions about library policies, services, and resources. Will assist EAL's subject librarians to keep both print and electronic resources in East Asian languages up to date, including an annual weeding project, work closely with the Gift & Exchange department to handle and organize the donation of books and journals, manage the influx of books and journals in CJK languages, and regularly review EAL-related database links and relevant LibGuides on the ULS website to ensure their accessibility. Incumbent will also handle and manage the EAL gateway requests, invoices, and other relevant correspondence, oversee EAL project progress, and maintain and provide CEAL yearly statistics. Incumbent will coordinate the hiring, interviewing, orientation, and supervising of student and cultivate collaborative relationships to promote EAL collections.

Job Summary

Assists personnel, answers inquiries, locates materials, and provides guidance related to library services. Researches and identifies resources to support informational needs. Maintains and updates online library systems and guides student employees.

Essential Functions

The incumbent is involved in a wide range of reference and public services, tracking collections, hiring student assistants, and other duties as assigned. Communication skills, specifically oral and written, as well as fluency in English and Chinese languages.

Physical Effort

Must be able to stoop/reach and lift books, materials and document cases (up to 10-15 lbs) and boxes (often up to 35-40 lbs), from shelves 9 feet off the ground. Also involves retrieving and negotiating aisles as narrow as 18 inches. Must be able to push book trucks throughout the EAL departments and navigate silver transport trucks (often 40-60 lbs) to/from the loading docks. Other physical efforts required is sitting, readings, and using a computer at a desk or similar workstations.
