UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is seeking a Bioinformatics Research Specialist as part of the Bioinformatics Shared Resource at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. The Bioinformatics Research Specialist will work as a data scientist/health informaticist/bioinformatician who will lead analyses of multi-dimensional clinical or genomic datasets with a strong focus on cancer research. The incumbent will work with the Bioinformatics leadership of the Cancer Center and in close collaboration with faculties at the Hillman Cancer Center to oversee their project design, data analysis, and data presentation.

The incumbent will also be responsible for collaborative computational and informatics research projects involving methods development, novel algorithm development and/or in-depth data analysis that facilitates and integrates implementation, visualization, and database management of multi-dimensional clinical and biological datasets generated at the Cancer Center or from public cancer databases.

Job Summary

Organizes and facilitates data collection and conducts statistical analysis of datasets while working across multiple, simultaneous projects. Applies scientific methodology and statistical analyses to implement appropriate methodologies for complex data management and statistical analyses. Facilitates algorithm development, software development, and result interpretation. Assists with grant preparations and staff training. Manipulates datasets and clean data and facilitates quality control procedures to ensure data accuracy.

Essential Functions

Ability to operate PC and telephone system and to communicate with others both orally and in writing. Proficient in data analysis; ability to collaborate with computer scientists, programmers, physicians, and laboratory scientists in cancer research. Must have excellent writing and presentation skills.

Physical Effort

Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. Will be required to move from workstation to other locations within the department, university, and UPMC. Very little heavy lifting required for this position.
