The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) is seeking a temporary, part-time instructor for its Fall 2024 course, PIA 2211 Non-profit Governance Board. This is a full semester course for 1.5 credits. We intend to offer the second part of the course in Spring 2025. The Fall 2024 term runs from Monday August 26, 2024 through Tuesday, December 17, 2024. The course is scheduled to meet in-person (Oakland Campus) on Thursdays from 6:00-7:15pm.

Course description:

Sound board governance is essential for effective management of nonprofit organizations. This course provides students with real world experience in nonprofit governance by placing them on the governing board of a local nonprofit organization. Classroom instruction will introduce students to theories and practices related to effective board engagement and leadership in the nonprofit sector. Students will learn about the role of the board in providing strategic direction for the organization as well as its fiduciary responsibilities. They will also discuss best practices for boards, including those related to the recruitment and retention of diverse members and leveraging the board for organizational success. Students will be expected to attend all board meetings with their assigned nonprofit organization and all classroom instructional sessions. Given the nature of the community partnership work in this course, students are asked to commit to taking the course over two semesters, for a total of 3 credit hours.

The course will combine classroom instruction with real-world experience, by placing students on the board of a local nonprofit organization. The instructor will prepare you for this role with course modules focused on the role of nonprofit boards, their financial responsibilities, and leadership in the nonprofit sector, among others. Students will get to put these principles into action through their board service, while simultaneously building a network of professionals from across sectors in our region.

The Johnson Institute will provide support to this course by connecting students to nonprofit organizations that have offered to give a student a place on their board.

Instructor's duties include preparing a syllabus, leading class sessions, grading and commenting on students' work, utilizing Canvas, and being available to meet with students outside of class. Enrollment will be approximately ten students.

Successful applicants will have at least a Master's degree in a relevant field (public administration, management). Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience teaching at the Master's level.

Interested applicants should include a CV and a brief letter of interest that includes discussion of teaching interests. Please include if you have post-secondary teaching experience. While all applications must be submitted through Talent Center, informal inquiries about the course should be directed to both Dr. Gary Hollibaugh, Director of the Public Administration Program, at gary.hollibaugh@pitt.edu and Doreen Hernndez, Administrator, Johnson Institute for Responsible Leadership & Frances Hesselbein Leadership Forum, at edoreen@pitt.edu.
