VWR International, LLC Senior Packaging Engineer in Phillipsburg, New Jersey

The Opportunity:

Avantor, a Global Fortune 500 company is looking for a dedicated Senior Packaging Engineer to optimize our Avantor Performance Materials organization. This Phillipsburg, NJ role is full-time, on- site.

Minimum Education Requirement: Bachelor's degree (in mechanical, packaging or manufacturing engineering highly preferred).

Required Experience (5+ years):

  • Managing and maintenance of a packaging program and process that includes, but is not limited to the following areas:
    • Development of new packaging
    • Evaluation of packaging for addition to the portfolio
    • System/process for the maintenance and update of technical packaging specifications
    • Process for managing revisions to packaging-vendor initiated, internally initiated, customer initiated, or other source.
  • Providing technical support to departments and functions for packaging related matters.
  • In packaging applications involving primary packaging (bottles, bags, pouches, ampoules, pails, drums, vials, and similar)
  • With corrugated, including kit boxes, over-pack boxes, pallet boxes, pads, corrugated inserts, etc.
  • In testing of packaging components and assemblies
  • In change management for assessment, evaluation and implementation of packaging changes
  • With common packaging materials including glass, HDPE, LDPE, PP, PET, PETG, etc.
  • Working in a team environment to collaborate with Product Management, Product Development, Operations, Engineering and other corporate functions.
  • Compatibility (product versus packaging), stability studies or other testing as required to establish
  • Collaboration tools (Microsoft Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Developing project plans and completing projects on-time, in budget, at the specified capacity.
  • Interacting will all levels of an organization

Preferred Experience:

  • In UN packaging requirements and testing
  • With primary container labels, shipping labels, in-process labels
  • With internal storage (drums, pails, vats, carboys, other).
  • Team supervision
  • In regulated environment - FDA, ISO
  • With a quality management system
  • AutoCAD or equivalent drafting application
  • Minitab or equivalent statistical application
  • With best practices for packaging storage based on materials, use and other appropriate criteria

You will be responsible for the development, management and maintenance of a packaging program that meets customer, compliance, regulatory and corporate requirements, initiatives and goals.

Participate in process and engineering functions as needed and related to new product introductions, process improvements, new equipment integration, automation initiatives, scale-up, validations, and packaging inspection.

Use a methodical packaging selection process that provides for an effective consideration of product, customer, business, regulatory and ESG requirements.

By understanding and considering inventory consolidation and supply optimization.

By leading the design, development, execution, implementation and documentation of studies, validations, specifications, and parameters required to

maintain the below. All such studies/tests/validations will be in alignment with corporate, customer, regulatory, compliance and other relevant processes and procedures. Studies may involve hands-on experimental work to be performed and/or management of contractors.

o Leak integrity-establish and maintain torque or other sealing requirements.

o Shipping integrity-such as temperature, pallet stacking; protection from damage, other.

o Product integrity-such as light sensitivity, temperature sensitivity; moisture sensitivity, sensitivity to bioburden or other contaminants, material compatibility, other.

o Product: Packaging compatibility such as material contact compatibility.

o Label integrity-such as adhesion to container for life of the product (chemical compatibility, potential leaching that could affect label / printing integrity) and under use conditions (e.g. temperature; freeze/thaw; physical contact, other); color and physical properties; bioburden resistant when appropriate; other.

  • Develop, implement and maintain a process for the acquisition, installation, process development, use, maintenance, upgrade, change (when necessary) of any equipment directly relevant to packaging integrity and management. Examples include but are not limited to: torque measurement equipment, manual torque application equipment, integrity testing equipment, other. Equipment responsibilities will still align with corporate procedures for effective PM, use, and change management.
  • Integrate, communicate, and collaborate with packaging vendors, contractors and customers to manage indicated job functions as appropriate and necessary together with procurement functions.
  • Integrate, communicate, and collaborate with Compliance, Shipping and Regulatory functions to assure appropriate guidelines, laws and regulations regarding packaging/transportation/storage of dangerous goods, chemicals and other compliance categories are met.
  • Lead functions as necessary and appropriate for the integration and use of packaging into full operation and production of product. This includes involvement in necessary pilot production runs, validation runs and troubleshooting for existing packaging matters.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve any packaging related matters for new or existing products.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT (Under Typical Positions): Typically works in an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level. Work assignments are diversified. Examples of past precedent are used to resolve work problems. New alternatives may be developed to resolve problems. A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on routine basis. Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary but does require walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than 10 lbs.
