THE POSITION

Are you in search of a professional biology position in which you can showcase your dedication, strong work ethic, and passion for fisheries management? The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is seeking an ambitious Fisheries Biologist 2 to join the Bureau of Fisheries, Division of Fisheries Management, and take on the role of Susquehanna River Biologist. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Susquehanna River Biologist, you will be responsible for the initiation, coordination, and administration of fisheries management activities in the Susquehanna River system, which includes the main stem Susquehanna River, North Branch Susquehanna River, and West Branch Susquehanna River. You will function as a lead worker to include participating in the interview and hiring process, instructing and overseeing assignments, and training and mentoring lower level technical fisheries workers.

This professional works independently to perform field investigations and studies documenting biological, chemical, physical, and social attributes of various fisheries for purposes of formulating and updating management plans. You will establish benchmark statistics for decision making, and assess management techniques including stocking, regulations, habitat management and protection, and informing and educating the public on issues related to fisheries management activities and objectives specific to the Susquehanna River system. Within this role, you will also be responsible for data collection through sampling, data entry and analysis, and reporting and discussion of results according to Fisheries Management Division protocols and standard techniques outline by professional publications.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Travel in and out of state may be required.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the Centre Regional Office in Bellefonte.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Fisheries Biologist 1, PFBC (commonwealth title); or

  • One year of professional experience conducting fish studies, fish investigations, or fish research and a bachelor’s degree in a biological science that includes or is supplemented by 12 college credits in fish biology, fisheries management, fish population dynamics, ichthyology, limnology, fish ecology, aquatic ecology, watershed ecology and management, wetland ecology and management, herpetology, freshwater entomology, fish culture, fish physiology, fish pathology, biometrics, or other courses closely related to fisheries science or aquatic ecology; or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes 12 college credits in fish biology, fisheries management, fish population dynamics, ichthyology, limnology, fish ecology, aquatic ecology, watershed ecology and management, wetland ecology and management, herpetology, freshwater entomology, fish culture, fish physiology, fish pathology, biometrics, or other courses closely related to fisheries science or aquatic ecology.
