THE POSITION

The Bureau of Benefits Administration (BBA) is responsible for administering a comprehensive pension benefits program for the Public School Employees' Retirement System (PSERS). The bureau provides professional and technical services to Public School employees including active and inactive members, retirees, beneficiaries, and persons legally authorized to act on their behalf. The bureau is organized into two divisions: Member Account Division and the Benefits and Exceptions Division.

Because production work is cyclical and subject to legislative changes, work staff may be assigned to perform a variety of tasks in other business areas based on PSERS operational needs.

This position is identified as essential level 2. It supports a critical business function and when there is a declaration of an office closing, emergency or disaster, the incumbent may be required to participate/assist in those functions to aid the business continuity process. As such, the incumbent may be required to remain at or report to work at headquarters or an alternate site and be available or reachable by telephone during the recovery process.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

No day is the same in this position! As a Retirement Technician Supervisor, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Conducting performance evaluations for retirement technicians

  • Monitoring and approving leave requests

  • Prioritizing and assigning work

  • Coaching staff to develop their skills needed to become more effective employees

  • Assisting staff with meeting goals

  • Training staff in reaching appropriate levels of Retirement Technician performance

    You will be expected to apply the provisions of the Retirement Code, rules, regulations, PSERS legal opinions, business rules and procedures as they relate to member accounts, employer reported data, benefit eligibility and benefit determination.

    Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week.

  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 60-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Retirement Technician; or

  • Three years of experience in technical work in a pension system or related occupational area, which includes two years of experience applying mathematical formulas and principles; or

  • An Associate Degree and one year of technical experience in a pension system or related occupational area applying mathematical formulas and principles; or

  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which includes two years of experience applying mathematical formulas and principles in a pension system or related occupational area.
