The Department of Transportation is currently seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee to assist with essential preventive maintenance and repairs on the equipment assigned to our Central Office located in Harrisburg. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will participate in a comprehensive training program led by managers and staff to gain proficiency in the analysis, maintenance, and repair of construction equipment, trucks, and vehicles with gasoline or diesel engines. Your responsibilities will include assisting with state and emissions inspections, as well as performing oil changes. You will conduct routine tests such as tune-ups, electric circuit evaluations, and diagnostics for battery, starter, alternator, and wiring issues. Additionally, you will engage in routine repair tasks, including engine remanufacturing, machining of engine components, engine assembly, and performance testing. You will also be tasked with snow removal operations for the Equipment Division’s parking lot and other designated areas.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Alternate work schedule may be available

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years as a Tradesman Helper (commonwealth title) working in the automotive field;or

  • Graduation from a post-high school diesel technology curriculum of an accredited trade or technical school;or

  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Special Requirements:

  • This position require employees to possess an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s Permit or License on the first day of employment.

  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.

  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.

  • All positions require operation of vehicles or equipment with a manual transmission.

  • Certain positions will require employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
