Position: Research Forester Graduate Assistant
Status: Part-time, (20hrs/week)
Department: Institute of Forestry
Reports to: Director of the Institute of Forestry
Start Date: Fall Semester 2025
Compensation: Stipend, Room, and Tuition
Stipend is $5000/semester and tuition scholarship is 100%, but students are responsible for program fees, including textbook fees charged each semester, and meals during residencies.
Description:
The Research Forester will provide research and management support to the Director of the Institute of Forestry and other faculty and staff affiliated with the Institute.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Management and analysis of data from on-going research projects and forest management activities.
Perform forestry research and management fieldwork (e.g. data collection, operational inventory, timber sale administration, etc.).
Provide supervision of student field crews.
Partial contribution to and review of written reports, manuscripts, and new research proposals.
Perform miscellaneous administrative duties related to Institute research, management, or teaching activities, including event planning and organization, van driving, academic support, etc.
Pursue a research-based Final Project under the supervision of the Institute of Forestry. That project will utilize data from the College Forest and contribute to on-going research projects and partnerships the Institute is engaged in or developing, with a particular focus on applications integrating remote sensing data into quantitative growth and yield modeling.
Assist with other duties as needed, including driving vans to support academic programming, or assigned by the Director of the Institute of Forestry .
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution in Forestry and enrollment in Paul Smith’s College Master’s degree programs.
Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.
Clear evidence of strong analytical skills and demonstrated field forestry experience.
Proficiency with R, python, or other analytical coding languages and with ArcPro or QGIS software.
Strong interest in forest biometrics or closely related quantitative fields such as forest economics or silviculture.
Is willing to work evenings and weekends.
Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier is preferred.
