Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)

The Generator Technical Services Lead (TSL) will directly support the Generator Technical Services Director (TSD) in managing construction and maintenance efforts across Calpine’s generator, exciter, and collector fleet. This supporting role includes all aspects of the responsibilities associated with back-office outage management, plus occasional dispatching to site to fulfill a Generator Engineer (GE) role for outage execution in times of peak resource demands. The TSL will hold safety at the forefront, while balancing quality workmanship, outage planning, repair necessities, and risks against the constraints of time, budget, and market requirements to develop and help fulfill efficient and prudent generator maintenance scopes.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serving as the primary backup for the TSD.

  • Supporting generators, exciters, and collectors maintenance needs and planning, both remotely and onsite.

  • Tracking and administratively supporting outages as necessary.

  • Participating in root cause analysis, and managing the associated process and corrective measures as necessary.

  • Providing technical support for online conditions, forced outages, and outage discoveries.

  • Reviewing outage reports.

  • Aiding in planning, scheduling and budgeting associated with generator maintenance.

  • Leading development of fleet issue solutions.

  • Leading development on fleet specific QA/QC sheets as necessary

  • Supervising OEM’s and third party vendors in their generator-related scopes with an eye for Calpine’s best interests; including promoting and monitoring safety and quality, providing an in-house second opinion on the necessary work scopes, curtailing wasteful efforts, and taking necessary steps to keep the work scope moving ahead efficiently.

  • Performing inspections and electrical and mechanical maintenance testing on generators, exciters, and collectors.

  • Evaluating test and inspection data supplied by other vendors.

  • Providing maintenance and repair recommendations, creating and scheduling outage scopes accordingly.

  • Soliciting and select vendors for quotes for outage scopes as necessary.

  • Instruct winders in performing repairs on generators, exciters, and collectors.

  • Writing reports to document outage finding and activities, and provide recommendations for future outages as necessary.

  • Expanding GE knowledge base, including keeping tabs on developments in testing and maintenance practices, as well as supervising mechanical disassembly/reassembly if necessary.

  • Communicating with and educating upper management and plant management as necessary on particular generator issues and events.

  • Researching and developing improved inspection, testing, and repair techniques.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science degree or better in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred, but other degrees and education levels will be considered based on demonstrated experience, knowledge, and ability.

  • Strong functional knowledge of generator inspection, testing, and maintenance practices.

  • 15+ years of Generator Maintenance experience. 10 Years Industry experience.

  • Ability to be self-motivated and self-directed to work independently with minimal supervision, yet able to work as a team.

  • Curiosity and determination to drive innovative solutions and expand the acquired knowledge base.

  • Organizational skills, communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Pass drug screening.

Preferential Qualifications

  • Significant experience with GE, Siemens, Toshiba, Alstom, Brush, and MHI units

  • Military, OEM, or Merchant Marine power maintenance training.

  • 7+ years in the industry.
