Job Summary and Qualifications
The Lead Medical Technologist/for BSMC collects blood, performs test, inputs patient information and test results into computer, performs computer functions as needed and assist in other duties as directed by laboratory supervisor/manager. The Lead Medical Technologist is proficient in one of the following disciplines: Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or Immunohematology (Blood Bank).
What you will do in this role:
Adheres to schedule and provides coverage in assigned areas. Adaptable to changes in workflows.
Appropriate use and inventory of reagents and supplies (initial/date all opened reagents).
Assists in maintaining general cleanliness and safety of work area to ensure that work area is clean and free of safety hazards.
Assumes responsibility for effectively addressing issues and solving problems. Promptly & accurately communicates pertinent information to management and/or staff.
Can perform venipuncture and capillary (finger & heel) sticks on infants, children and adults.
Can trouble-shoot minor instrument malfunctions or call service if needed and notify nursing units when there will be a delay in testing.
Effectively manages all aspects of workload: check/reconcile outstanding & un-received specimens, reduce TAT, assure no delay in blood collection, assist nursing staff, and resolve personnel issues. Supervises work assignments to ensure that performance standard and priorities are met.
Efficiently performs employee evaluations on time.
Follows protocols for checking and reporting critical values and delta checks per SOP.
Follows SOP for checking and reconciling outstanding tests and draws.
Has no unapproved overtime, excessive tardiness or mis-punch.
Maintains competency in designated technical areas (both automated and manual testing procedures). Assists in Bone Marrow procedure.
Performs and reports tests/procedures per SOP, works effectively under stressful situations.
Performs appropriate volume of workload within specific time frames. Completes work from previous shifts and assists others as available or needed.
Performs tests and reports results during computer downtime per SOP. Uses appropriate downtime procedures.
Performs, trouble-shoots and documents instrument maintenance and malfunctions per SOP.
Performs/reviews and documents QC per SOP.
Print/review/reconcile computer reports as assigned.
Prioritizes test procedures per SOP. Performs STAT tests/procedures in timely manner.
Proficiently operates instruments and can perform minor equipment maintenance.
Promotes teamwork, encourages and supports others, respects co-workers and members of management.
Properly identifies patient/specimens using two forms of I.D. (Full Name and Medical Record number, DOB, or Account number) on collection labels to patient's wristband and/or test tube. Properly uses equipment's/supplies and collection techniques.
Records equipment temperature checks per SOP.
Successful participation in proficiency and competency testing.
What qualifications you will need:
Prefer one year of experience in one of the Laboratory Sciences.
Bachelors Degree, or Associate Degree must be obtained within 60 months of employment start date
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Medical Lab Scientist must be obtained within 60 months of employment start date
