National Park Service Fish Biologist in Pahrump, Nevada

Summary This position is located in Death Valley National Park, in the Resources Division. Open to the first 101 applicants or until 09/25/2024 whichever comes first. Responsibilities This position is stationed in Pahrump, Nye County, Nevada approximately 60 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada. Death Valley National Park is located 65 miles west of Pahrump and consists of 3.4 million acres with 95% percent designated as wilderness. Pahrump is located in the Mojave Desert at an elevation of 2,700 ft. Temperatures typically range from approximately 85-105 degrees in the summer to 40-60 degrees in the winter. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Pahrump and Las Vegas. Population is approximately 35,000 with affordable housing. Recreational opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, golfing, and off-roading. Boating and fishing is available at nearby Lake Mead and the Colorado River. Visit PAHRUMP true NEVADA for additional information MAJOR DUTIES: Leads long term ecosystem monitoring program for an endangered fish species. Oversees data entry, data integrity through 100% QAQC protocols, and data synthesis for a Program Manager. Reviews and contributes to interagency conservation and recovery mitigations and technical reports. Develop research proposals to address endangered fish population dynamics and aquatic ecosystem processes. Coordinates with Interpretation staff on fish/aquatic program activities, website updates, and VC exhibits. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. Qualifications REQUIREMENTS (Cont): Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. QUALIFICATIONS All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/25/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position, you must meet both the Basic Requirements for the Fish Biologist, 0482 series AND the Minimum Experience or Education Qualifications for the GS-09 grade level. Basic Requirements for the 0482 Series (you must meet one of the following): 1. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher level degree with a major field of study in biological sciences that included: At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.) You must provide a copy of your transcripts. - OR - 2. A combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must provide a copy of your transcripts. - AND - In addition to the Basic Requirements, as stated above, you must possess at least one of the following Minimum Experience or Education Qualifications for the GS-09 grade level by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience MUST include all the following: 1) Developing and coordinating fish/aquatic monitoring projects; 2) Participating in the conservation and recovery of species of concern; 3) Performing fish population estimates; 4) Acting as laboratory manager for a fish/aquatics program including at least one of the following: preparation of technical reports and/or coordinating research projects with federal, state, NGO, and/or academic institutions. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a directly related field OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a directly related field. Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying of heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep rocky terrain, and forests. The incumbent is occasionally required to operate small watercraft in the performance of their duties. Craft is a small open outboard motorboat used for management and monitoring purposes. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
