Job Title: Animal Technician

Job Description

Assists with daily operations and care of animals. Ensures and maintains established standards of practice and operational efficiency. Serves as a source of information to investigators and support staff on animal handling, restraint, and pre- and post-procedural care or sanitation services. Perform a variety of skilled animal husbandry duties and specialized services for animals and animal colonies, including properly housing animals, performing various procedures and skilled observation of animal conditions. Maintain general sanitation procedures as required.

Hard Skills

  • Animal observation and evaluation for signs of illness and stress

  • Feeding, housing, and handling animals according to regulations

  • Specialized drug administration and sample collection

  • Pre- and post-procedural animal care

  • Maintaining records of treatments

  • Sanitizing and decontaminating animal rooms and facilities

  • Performing rodent euthanasia services

  • Maintaining and operating animal care processing equipment

  • Inventory management of supplies

  • Operating vehicles for animal and material transport

Soft Skills

  • Providing information and guidance to investigators and support staff

  • Training and instructing staff on animal care techniques

  • Diagnosing mechanical and technical problems

  • Performing additional related tasks as necessary

Work Environment

Animal care facilities, including low to moderate hazardous areas (e.g., BL2). Periodic decontamination, maintenance, and rotation of equipment in facility washing centers.
