A Brief Overview

Serves as the practice leader/advocate for Pathology phlebotomy staff in order to accomplish organizational and departmental strategic goals and objectives. Coordinates services and provides leadership for all shifts.

Essential Functions

  • Performs direct clinical care via patient testing and specimen collection using medical instrumentation and approved standardized methods.

  • Assists with interviewing, hiring, training, orientation, schedules, evaluates, develops, counsels, disciplines and terminates personnel in accordance with hospital and departmental policies. • Personnel Management ◦ Prioritizes and coordinates daily work activities and schedules. ◦ Provides leadership and guidance by sharing expertise with others. ◦ Oversees the training of employees on job related tasks. ◦ Conducts employee performance management duties including completion and delivery of performance evaluations, setting goals, dissemination of information, coaching, addressing performance issues/routine correction actions, and recommending termination of employment. ◦ Submits notifications for personnel actions (e.g., status changes, terminations). ◦ Selects and hires staff. • Operational/Financial Management ◦ Ensures cost effective use of resources by identifying and implementing changes related to staff allocation and assignment, and patient/department supplies. ◦ Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety practices, policies and recordkeeping standards. ◦ Develops and maintains policies and procedures. ◦ Participates in the implementation of business plans for the area. ◦ May assist with annual budget by tracking expenses and providing input for future budget needs.

  • Communicates administrative and operational changes to assigned personnel. Serve as a resource person for shift personnel and other health professionals, gives advice and directions concerning more complex/sensitive problems encountered.

  • Ensures that instruments and equipment are in proper working order and that any service repairs are performed.

  • Ensures compliance with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, practices and compliance with standards established by regulatory agencies.

  • Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of supplies.

  • Keeps abreast of current developments in the clinical laboratory field.

  • Serves as a resource person for Section personnel and other health professionals; gives advice and direction concerning more complex/sensitive problems encountered.

  • Reviews results of tests performed in the Sections on a daily basis to maintain quality of the testing.

  • Monitors the workload to assure timely completion of patient testing and other related activities (i.e. quality control, equipment maintenance, function checks, etc.).

  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

  • Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma Required or

  • G.E.D Required and

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years phlebotomy experience required. Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Skill in performing capillary collection and venipuncture techniques.

Licenses and Certifications

  • ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist within 180 Days Required and

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association within 180 Days Required
