Vice President, Engineering

Overview:

Mastercard’s Authentication Solutions team part of the Digital Solutions Engineering is seeking a Vice President of Software Engineering to lead software engineering teams developing consumer-facing products and services for the Authentication Solutions platform.

As a key member of the executive team, the VP of Software Engineering will oversee a team of approximately 70 individuals, including software engineers, managers, directors, and technical program managers, most of whom are located in O’Fallon, MO. This role requires a visionary leader who can inspire innovation, foster collaboration, and build a culture of excellence within the engineering organization.

The Digital Solutions Engineering team is responsible for MasterCard’s electronic payment system as well as ensure payments are convenient and secure. The products are primarily focused on authentication, tokenization, fraud prevention, risk mitigation across all payment channels as well as all stakeholders, issuers, acquirers, merchants, processors, and consumers. The key objectives of the solutions are to prove identity, reduce abandonments, reduce fraud, increase approval rates, and secure the payments ecosystem.

Role:

• Define and execute the software engineering vision, strategy, and roadmap, from inception to scaled customer usage, in alignment with the company’s overall goals.

• Lead and mentor a diverse, global engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

• Partner with other executive leaders to drive business and technical strategy, ensuring alignment with product management, operations, and other key departments.

• Oversee the design, architecture, and development of robust, scalable, and secure software solutions.

• Implement best practices for software development, including Agile methodologies, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), and automated testing.

• Ensure the team is leveraging the latest technologies and approaches, evaluating and adopting new tools and frameworks as appropriate.

• Manage the software development lifecycle, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery of products and features.

• Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of the engineering teams and drive continuous improvement.

• Oversee resource allocation, budgeting, and capacity planning for the engineering teams.

• Collaborate with Product Management, Regional sales, and other departments to ensure the engineering team is delivering solutions that meet customer needs and business objectives.

• Collaborate with internal infrastructure teams such as network, F5 for building highly scalable and resilient products.

• Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent, fostering a diverse and inclusive team environment.

All About You:

• Extensive experience in software engineering/development or architecture, including significant time spent in senior leadership roles (Director, Vice President, or similar).

• Proven experience in leading large-scale software development projects successfully managing geographically dispersed engineering teams and delivering high-impact results.

• Strong technical background with experience in modern software development practices, cloud computing, microservices architecture, and DevOps. Backend experience is preferable.

• Proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, and PCF.

• Expert-level knowledge of microservices architecture, data model design, and cloud technologies.

• Thorough understanding of infrastructure and network components such as nginx, F5, and Akamai.

• Experience designing and implementing distributed systems, with a thorough understanding of building and operating high-performance, high-reliability, large-scale systems.

• Exceptional leadership skills with a track record of building and leading high-performing engineering teams.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.

In line with Mastercard’s total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary based on location, experience and other qualifications for the role and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role.
