Job Summary and Qualifications

The Pharmacy Purchaser is responsible for managing the pharmaceutical inventory in the hospital including purchasing pharmaceuticals and related products, oversight of receipt and stocking, and optimization of pharmacy inventory. Record invoices in purchase order log. Maintain required records for internal audit. Ensure that contract items are purchased when available. The Purchaser will assist the individual in charge of automation with respect to Automated Dispensing Cabinet inventory management, including the maintenance of controlled substance inventory and handling the request for an addition of new items to the pharmacy inventory. May be required to work at Ocala Regional Medical Center, West Marion Community Hospital, and/or The Free Standing Emergency Departments as needed.

Essential Duties:

  • Under the supervision of Director of Pharmacy, will participate in all activities of the pharmacy department that involve the inventory management of drugs, medication storage areas and department related supplies. The position functions in accordance with standard written policy & procedures, guidelines, and state and federal regulations.

  • Establishes and maintains appropriate inventory levels of drugs/supplies. Makes decisions in purchasing while complying with budget limitations, and achieving a maximum inventory rate.

  • Communicates in real time shortages of medications or changes in medication stock availability.

  • Oversees receiving, storage, and return of medications to the Pharmacy wholesaler.

  • Maintains invoicing for all drug and supply accounts.

  • Process wholesaler invoices for payment by accounts payable according to Policy and Procedures.

  • Coordinates and documents disposal of all expired medications.

  • Assists with paperwork on medication recalls.

  • Prepares Pharmacy Department for annual inventory; updating shelf labels, inventory supply forms, and databases as needed.

  • Interprets and communicates purchasing procedures to departments; assists requisitions and orders.

  • Assists DOP or designee in establishing and maintaining appropriate stock levels in pharmacy.

  • Evaluate contract compliance and implement change to correct in all pharmacy purchasing areas of hospital.

  • Manage the transfer of drugs between areas of the pharmacy, the hospital and nonhospital accounts.

  • Responsible for new drug addition, change, deletion process.

  • Demonstrates working knowledge with the general duties of a Pharmacy technician.

  • Complies with facility policy and procedures and regulatory requirements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What qualifications you will need:

  • State Registration Pharmacy Technician

  • High School Graduate / GED

  • Less than 1 year of pharmacy procuring experience required
