Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent in this position is responsible for educating women and families about breastfeeding and human lactation. Provide holistic, evidence-based breastfeeding support, care, risks of not breastfeeding and education from preconception to weaning for women and their families which supports initiatives of the state. Conducts bedside lactation rounds as needed in county hospitals in coordination with Healthily Start and WIC staff. Consults with mothers having breastfeeding problems, refer as appropriate. Serves as the designated breastfeeding expert, breastfeeding peer counselor coordinator, and breastfeeding coordinator for the WIC Program. Responds to referrals from breastfeeding peer counselors and WIC funded staff as needed. Provides support in person, as well as by telephone contact, for clients receiving electrical breast pumps in accordance to the Breast Pump Equipment Guidelines from the WIC Procedure Manual. Maintains the Breast Pump Follow-Up Contacts spreadsheet regarding the number of contacts provided to each client for each month. Assists the WIC Coordinator with policies and procedures regarding breastfeeding promotion. Assists the WIC Coordinator with the training curriculum for the breastfeeding peer counselors.

Completes assessments, develops an Individualized Breast Care Plan or Breastfeeding Plan. Conducts hospital and physician office visits to provide services to families and breastfeeding support.

To facilitate the development of policies which protect, promote, and support breastfeeding and act as an advocate for breastfeeding, to support initiatives of the state. Create a culture that promotes breastfeeding and learning for staff, health professionals and the community about breastfeeding and human lactation. Provide holistic, evidence-based breastfeeding support, care, risks of not breastfeeding and education from preconception to weaning for the community and its partners. Plans, teaches and evaluates classes/in-service education for employees and providers of FDOH Marion, in county hospitals and private practice offices. Provides materials to individuals and programs on state initiatives and services offered by FDOH Marion. Selects appropriate breastfeeding related supplies for clinic and educations materials for the community at large.

Assists in the recruitment and coordination of local community partnerships by helping to organize meetings and conducting business and activities of the partnership. Coordinates partnership activities within the county. Represents Florida Department of Health Marion at community events and meetings including but not limited to: support groups, workshops, health fairs, trainings, community based organizations, local coalitions, and taskforces.

Assist in the identification, planning and implementation of targeted screening, outreach programs based on basic analysis of health trends and distribution among various cultural, social, economic, and subgroup populations in the community as part of state initiatives.

Coordinates program activities with communicable disease staff, community health staff, Healthy Start, WIC, and health department staff as needed. Submits regular reports as required to ensure appropriate progress on work plans. Prepares documents for vendors and ensures compliance with state guidelines. Provide information as needed and regular in-service trainings. Completes forms and paperwork in hard copy and electronically as required.

Conducts quality assurance programs to monitor the effectiveness of the program and its partners as pertains to state initiatives.

Reads, understands, and implements directives and other duties as assigned.

Completes and submits time sheets, EARS, and travel accurately and according to established division and agency guidelines

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to successfully assist mothers with breastfeeding skills

  • Ability to work with individuals and groups with different levels of education, knowledge, and cultural backgrounds

  • Knowledge of computer programs and applications

  • Ability to utilize computer programs and applications

  • Ability to problem solve

    Qualifications:

    Minimum -

    International Board Certified Consultant or Certified Lactation Counselor

    Current valid drivers license

    Willing to travel to clinics using your own vehicle

    Experience providing breastfeeding education to clients or medical professionals

    Preferred -

    WIC or Healthy Start experience
