USmax Corporation Lead Senior Nuclear Safety Specialist in Oak Ridge, Tennessee

USmax Corporationis seeking aLead Senior Nuclear Safety Specialistto support a major Department of Energy (DOE) project. This key role will be responsible for the development, review, and implementation of safety basis documentation for both nuclear and non-nuclear facilities in accordance with DOE requirements and standards. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in nuclear safety management and a demonstrated ability to lead teams in the approval and implementation of safety documentation and risk assessments.

This position is contingent upon contract award.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Safety Basis Documentation:

  • Lead the development and review of safety basis documentation, including DSAs (Documented Safety Analyses), PDSAs (Preliminary Documented Safety Analyses), hazard categorization documents, TSRs (Technical Safety Requirements), and related safety basis documents.
  • Ensure compliance with DOE Nuclear Safety Requirements and applicable regulations, including DOE-STD-1104-2009.
  • Serve as Lead Reviewer, conducting and overseeing documented reviews of Safety Basis Documentation for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.

Hazard and Risk Management:

  • Apply knowledge of nuclear risk management and hazard assessment to ensure that program priorities are established, resources are appropriately allocated, and safety of operations is maintained.
  • Utilize deterministic and probabilistic techniques for hazard analysis and safety documentation for both nuclear and non-nuclear hazards.
  • Lead teams in applying probabilistic risk assessment techniques to identify and categorize hazards.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with DOE standards, such as DOE O 420.1 and DOE-STD-1189, and manage nuclear safety regulations, practices, and procedures to safeguard health and safety in normal operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with DOE contractor representatives to develop Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs) and ensure their effective implementation.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Lead teams in the preparation of documents such as Safety Evaluation Reports (SERs), which provide the basis for approval of nuclear safety documentation.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior staff and stakeholders in the development and application of safety protocols.

Required Qualifications:

  • Training on DOE standards and guides for nuclear safety management programs in accordance with 10 CFR 830.
  • Expertise in DOE nuclear safety standards and regulations, including experience as a Lead Reviewer per DOE-STD-1104-2009.
  • Proficiency in safety analyses, hazard categorization, and compliance with DOE Nuclear Safety Requirements.

Required Experience:

  • 15+ years of experience in the development, review, and implementation of safety basis documentation for nuclear and non-nuclear facilities.
  • 10+ years of experience at Oak Ridge Sites or similar DOE facilities.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with safety documentation and approvals in high-hazard nuclear facilities.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, including DOE and contractor representatives.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

Security Clearance Requirements:

  • Active Q Clearance (or ability to obtain one) is required.

Work Location / Schedule:

  • Oak Ridge, TN.
  • Remote work flexibility may be considered.

Travel Requirements:

  • Occasional travel may be required.
