Radiation Nurse Specialist position in Norwalk, CT

Full time, 40 hours per week Monday - Friday 8:00-4:30pm.

Summary:

Provides clinical leadership and expertise in area of specialty. The job exists to meet the physical, psychological, social and educational needs of patients and their families, as well as to provide consultation to other health care providers regarding needs and nursing care of patients receiving radiation therapy. This contributes to achieving the organization's objective by facilitating individuals to attain and promote health through purposeful interventions.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assists Radiation Oncologist with weekly visits and implements physician orders.

  2. Performs nursing assessment at time of Simulation or within one week of start of therapy including medication reconciliation.

  3. Assesses patients for special needs (skin reaction, weight mgt, vital signs, dietary needs, social services, psychology needs) and plans appropriate intervention.

  4. Educates patients, their families, and health care providers on treatments, side effects & symptom management.

  5. Performs direct patient care as needed: monitoring IV's and other equipment for inpatients, skin care, safety assessment and monitoring, administration of medication as ordered by MD, assists with implants and brachytherapy procedures .

  6. Documents all assessments & clinical care provided, referral for services, communication with other depts. or physician offices, and administration of medications in the medical record. Assists with patient needs for medical leave and other such documents.

  7. Maintains liaison with other disciplines, such as nutritional support, speech therapy, social work, navigators, social services, inpatient staff and office staff.

  8. Presents a positive professional image by exhibiting good patient experience skills, positive communication skills, professional behavior and appearance.

  9. Fills all compliance responsibilities related to the position including management of supplies in exam rooms & equipment

  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Information:

Required:

CT RN License

Bachelors Degree

Minimum Experience: three years

Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified

Desired: Formal radiation/oncology training, OCN desired.

Working Conditions:

Manual: Some manual skills/motor coord & finger dexterity

Occupational: Little or no potential for occupational risk

Physical Effort: Medium to Heavy effort. May exert up to 35 lbs. force

Physical Environment: Generally pleasant working conditions
