Position Specific Description

As a Senior Data Scientist at Palms Insurance, you will play a strategic role in shaping the analytics and data science initiatives within our organization. This position requires a highly skilled and experienced individual who can leverage advanced analytical techniques, machine learning models, and data engineering practices to drive business insights and decision-making processes. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in the commercial insurance sector, with a strong understanding of its complexities and data-rich environment. Additionally, proficiency in Scrum, documentation and maintenance of repositories, and integration with tools such as GitHub and JIRA are essential.

The ideal candidate will be expected to do the following:

Visionary Expertise:

• Provide thought leadership in applying data science and advanced analytics to address key business challenges.

• Co-develop a comprehensive data strategy that aligns with the company’s strategic goals in collaboration with the Head of Data Analytics.

• Collaborate with junior data scientists and analysts, fostering a culture of continuous learning.

• Oversee change releases, ensuring seamless integration of data science solutions into production.

Data Analysis and Modeling:

• Design and implement predictive models, machine learning algorithms, and statistical analyses to optimize underwriting, claims management, risk assessment, and client engagement.

• Develop algorithms for operations & risk management to enhance accuracy and efficiency.

• Build and maintain a feature store for efficient access and reuse of features across machine learning projects.

• Analyze large datasets to uncover actionable insights driving business growth and efficiency.

• Ensure continuous integration and deployment via GitHub and maintain code documentation.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:

• Stay updated on the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices in data science.

• Evaluate and adopt new tools and technologies to enhance data analytics capabilities.

• Drive innovation by improving existing processes, models, and frameworks.

• Lead peer-review processes to ensure high-quality and reliable data science work.

Collaboration and Communication:

• Work closely with stakeholders (finance, underwriting, claims, actuarial) to understand needs and provide data-driven solutions.

• Effectively communicate complex analytical concepts to non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.

• Develop strong relationships with external partners and vendors to enhance analytics capabilities.

• Utilize Scrum methodologies to manage projects, ensuring timely delivery aligned with business objectives.

Governance and Compliance:

• Ensure data analytics activities comply with industry regulations and company policies.

• Implement data governance best practices to maintain data integrity, quality, and security.

• Develop and oversee standards, guidelines, and processes for data management and analytics.

The ideal candidate will meet the following qualifications:

Education & Experience:

• Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.

Technical Skills:

• Expert knowledge in statistical analysis, machine learning, predictive modeling, and data mining techniques.

• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Julia, R, and SQL.

• Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) and web app tools.

• Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and data engineering practices.

• Proficiency in GitHub integration with JIRA for project tracking and version control.

• Strong Scrum skills for managing projects in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for developing algorithms, modeling techniques, and optimization methods that support many aspects of NextEra and FPL business. Employees in this role use knowledge of machine learning, optimization, statistics, and applied mathematics along with abilities in software engineering with a focus on distributed computing and data storage infrastructure (i.e., “Big Data”).

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops machine learning, optimization and other modeling solutions

  • Prepares comprehensive documented observations, analyses and interpretations of results including technical reports, summaries, protocols and quantitative analyses

  • Works with big data and distributed computing platforms

  • Develops software and contributes to product development

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

  • Experience: 4+ years
