Job Description

The Senior Associate General Counsel, Legal Privacy and Data Security (SAGC) will lead a team of attorneys and paralegals, providing strategic global data privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity legal advice to AbbVie’s global business and compliance teams. The SAGC will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing global privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity laws, regulations, and other legal developments with an understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare laws and regulations. The SAGC will act as a subject matter expert on all matters relating to global data privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity law and will provide practical, timely, strategic, and high-quality legal advice on these matters. The SAGC will provide strategic legal advice on corporate initiatives and projects and provide appropriate guidance to business units and the compliance teams. The SAGC will be responsible for managing and developing a team of high-performing attorneys and paralegals and will have strong leadership and strategic skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads a team of attorneys and paralegals to analyze and clearly communicate strategic legal advice on global data privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity issues to AbbVie’s global business and compliance teams.

  • Monitors and analyzes global privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity laws, regulations, and other legal developments with an understanding of the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare laws and regulations

  • Identifies highly complex legal issues related to the assigned subject matter, develops alternative solutions, and implements resolution. Resolves complex to highly complex legal matters independently. Leads cross-functional projects.

  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of supported AbbVie businesses and knowledge of the broader business impact of the teams’ activities. Keeps abreast of changes in laws that affect client areas. Proactively works with other internal and external teams to help shape future laws.

  • Independently navigates legal complex issues related to third-party partners, customers, suppliers and other external stakeholders and reports on issues of significant importance to senior management.

  • Identifies unmet needs and future legal issues and proactively proposes strategies to optimize outcomes and results for the company. Defines project objectives and manages those and other assigned projects to completion.

  • Mentors, coaches, and directs assigned attorneys and paralegals; serves as a role model and as a champion of the legal department through work ethic, attitude, interpersonal skills, and successful results. Plays a key role in selecting, recruiting, and developing attorneys and paralegals.

  • Advises legal department management of critical legal issues and project developments in a timely manner. Executes core job responsibilities in a timely manner.

  • Advises Managers, Directors, Vice Presidents, and Officers. Recognized by these clients as both an expert in the supported substantive area and relied upon for complex legal advice. Serves as a recognized source of current knowledge and innovative ideas related to the assigned subject matter, both for senior management and other attorneys.

  • Selects and manages external counsel and contract attorneys for appropriate matters and manages the budget for their team.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • J.D. degree and meet the professional licensing requirement of the state in which they practice.

  • 10+ years of relevant experience.

  • 10+ years of experience advising clients on global data privacy, data protection, and cybersecurity issues. Significant preference for experience in the pharmaceutical sector.

  • Excellent legal analysis skills and proven ability to identify, communicate, and quickly address critical issues for clients.

  • Proven ability to identify unmet client needs, future legal issues, and proactively propose and implement strategies to optimize outcomes and results.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated success in managing a team preferred.

  • The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.​
