Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking a Reservoir Aide (Utility Maintenance Mechanic I) in our Water Production Division. The Reservoir Aide (Utility Maintenance Mechanic I) position works independently in the maintenance and repairing of boats, aquatic plant harvester, Hydrolab water quality 1onitor and various types of equipment. This person assists in the monitoring of the general health of reservoirs, shoreline facilities as well as general maintenance of the City owned facilities around the reservoirs. This position performs inspections daily; verifies and documents operating system conditions. The Reservoir Aide (Utility Maintenance Mechanic I) also maintains records and prepares reports as needed.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Performs minor overhauls, repairs, replacement and maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, chemical feeders, hydraulic equipment, mixers and other water treatment equipment, boats, aquatic plant harvester, conveyor and other equipment as needed.

  • Assists in the monitoring of the reservoirs, shoreline, and facilities by collecting water samples and related data using specialized equipment, treating water with various types of chemicals, and logging and entering lake data into a computer.

  • Investigates requests for service and other related concerns and responds to complaints from the public and contractors.

  • Assists the Watershed Inspector with on-site inspections, construction compliance with codes, and checks for potential safety problems by conducting visual and physical inspections. Ensures compliance with erosion and sediment control standards. Maintain Daily work Log.

  • Conducts research and enters information into a computer.

  • Performs inspections daily; verifies and documents operating system conditions.

  • Must be able to read manuals and troubleshoot problems.

  • Reviews emergency conditions and participates in storm preparation and recovery.

  • Assists with the Tree Removal Program according to City Code and Department Policy.

  • Maintains city owned facilities, including keeping dams and spillways free of vegetation and debris.

  • Must be able to use small equipment such as gas-powered trimmer, chainsaw, and blower.

  • Works with other crews in Water Production as needed. Work may include walking over uneven terrain for long distances.

  • Must be able to swim.

  • Completion of the Virginia Boating Safety Course will be required.

  • The ability to trailer and operate a boat is desired, but training will be provided.

  • Must be able to obtain VDACS Registered Technician certification for pesticide application.

  • Ability to use computers, cameras, and similar equipment.

  • All other duties deemed necessary.

  • Climbs ladders and stairs, bends, walks, pushes, pulls, stoops and lifts up to 75 lbs. throughout an 8-hour work day;

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

One year in machinery repair or maintenance required.

The desired candidate will possess two years of machinery repair or maintenance experience.

Additional Information & Requirements

Valid Driver's License required.

Work Hours: Monday - Thursday; 6:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Work Location: Moore's Bridges Water Treatment Plant, 6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, VA

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.

This position is designated as an 'Essential' position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, after hours, weekends, and/or holiday shifts in response to emergencies and severe weather.**

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
