Overview | The Sheila Y. Oliver Center for Politics and Race in America seeks to fill a critical gap in our understanding of America's political landscape by serving as a non-partisan, multidisciplinary, fact tank on the link between race and politics in the US. The Center harnesses the collective expertise of Rutgers-Newark's esteemed scholars in political science, sociology, psychology, history, public administration, and data science, as well as forging partnerships with local and state-level institutions. We are committed to dissecting the connections between race and political attitudes, beliefs, practices, contexts, and structures. The Center operates with three key objectives: first, as a vital data resource center, producing and rapidly disseminating high-quality data on race and politics; second, as a hub for advanced training in critical methods and data analysis essential for comprehending the intricate web of race and politics; and third, as a catalyst for diversifying the public service sector by expanding access to careers in this field. The Center for Politics and Race in America was established in 2023 with funding from the State of New Jersey. In 2024, it was renamed to honor the late Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver, the first Black woman to hold statewide office. |
