Position Summary:

As an Assistant Coach for NJIT's intercollegiate Men’s & Women’s Fencing teams, this function finds the incumbent responsible for assisting the Head Coach in the proper and overall management of the program with a special emphasis on coaching epee. To accomplish this role, responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Essential Functions:

  1. Coaching and Teaching Activities: This function finds its incumbent providing a full array of services related to the Men’s & Women’s Fencing programs. By way of illustration and not limitation, this function:
  • Assists in organizing, preparing, and conducting team practices, training and competition.

  • Specializes in epee.

  • Assists in the identification and recruitment of prospective student-athletes for the intercollegiate Men’s & Women’s Fencing programs, in accordance with NCAA rules, regulations, guidelines and standards.

  • Provides guidance and mentorship to the student athletes.

  • Provides assistance in the coordination and administration of the program as required.

  • Assists with ensuring a safe training and competitive environment.

  1. NCAA Compliance: Knowledge of and adherence to all applicable NCAA rules, regulations, bylaws, constitutions and related university rules, regulations and policies.

  2. Maintain current health care certifications. (First aid, CPR/AED).

  3. Performs other duties as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required.

  • Minimum of 2 years of coaching experience on the club or intercollegiate level; with a specialty in coaching epee.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students required.

  • Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in the area of sporting specialty.

  • Knowledge of applicable team or individual sport and its playing rules.

  • Must possess the ability to foster a cooperative environment.

  • Must have knowledge of NCAA student-athlete academic eligibility requirements and recruiting rules.

  • Must have the ability to understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
