SUMMARY: Under general direction, to plan, organize and direct a nutrition program with a focus on diabetes management in the Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC), Ambulatory Care Services (ACS); to provide supervision and technical assistance to Health Education Unit and clinic staff, and to do related work as required.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

  1. Conducts needs assessment for nutrition and health services and nutrition education program. Implements and evaluates educational programs for Health Education Unit as needed. 2. Develops long-range goals and specific objectives for nutrition programs and related health programs. 3. Provides supervision and/or technical guidance to other Health Education Unit staff as needed. 4. Designs and coordinates training programs for students and dietetic interns. 5. Assists community groups in the development of standards for diabetes nutrition programs and in securing funding for these programs as applicable. 6. Educates and collaborates with ACMC, ACS, associated government agencies and community groups on nutrition related program and their research findings. 7. Designs, prepares and conducts in-service nutritional education programs for ACS staff and community groups as needed. 8. Reviews and prepares pamphlets and other nutrition informational aids for dissemination to the community. 9. Assists with data collection and evaluates the effectiveness of diabetes/nutrition interventions as evidenced by positive patient outcomes on an ongoing basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either I Experience: Two years as a Nutritionist/CDE with the Alameda County Medical Center or other comparable health care facility. OR II Education: Possession of a Master's degree in nutrition, public health nutrition, or other closely related field from an accredited college or university, and completion of an internship approved by the American Dietetic Association. CDE or CDE eligible. (CDE eligible: a clinician who has a minimum of two years of experience in diabetes self-management education in health care settings within the U.S.A. and completed 1,000 hours of diabetes self-management education within the past five years and currently employed in a primary role as a diabetes educator or its equivalent at the time of application of the CDE exam), AND two years experience in nutrition or dietetics, which includes at least one-year in a health agency performing program planning and evaluation related to but not limited to diabetes education. Experience supervising is highly desirable, OR III Education: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in nutrition, public health nutrition or some other appropriate field from an accredited four-year college or university, Completion of an appropriate internship approved by the American Dietetic Association CDE or CDE eligible. Three years experience in nutrition or dietetics, which includes at least one-year in a health agency performing program planning and evaluation related to but not limited to diabetes education. Experience supervising is highly desirable.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS: Registered Dietitian (RD) with the Commission of Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association; Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) by National Certification Board of Diabetes Education or eligible; Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
